Gastric Emptying Study

I wonder if a barium swallow (not modified) would be helpful. It is another test where you eat something laced with barium and they follow it down the esophagus into the stomach. Sometimes the muscle that connects the esophagus to the stomach can have problems letting food through and can cause an uncomfortable sensation.

my gastro doc has never done any tests on me and probably never will. i was diagnosed with gerd and a slow emptying stomach just from my symptoms. i guess he feels that doing tests would just explain what we already know. if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, then its a duck. im on double dose pariet and when im bad im on motilum as well and it does the trick.

lauren, when you say you take enzymes 10 mins before meals, how exactly does that help? i might start doing that if you found it helped a lot.

Lauren,
Recently I've been taking my enzymes 8-15 minutes before I eat too..I learned this from the CF at Albony, NY. That doesn't seem to help..I eat tons of fiber all day, flaxseed, drink 70+ oz of water and each mostly whole foods. I am anxious to see what the study shows. I also have been fairly constipated for a cool 6 months so we have a series of tests line up hahah. Thanks for the advice!!

kybert,

Taking your enzymes 8-15 mintues before a meal gives them time to get to the bottom of your stomach where they will be ready to accept your food and make the digestion a lot easier. For 24 years I took them right when I was about to eat but just last month I learned about the 8-15 minute thing..this nurse at Albany has had some many results from his patients..like gaining weight, better BMI's and better digestion all around. Maybe give it a try?

Kybert,
You might want to read my article about how enzyme supplements work. The whole point is that they help break apart digested food to pull the nutrients out of it. This is a process that is supposed to happen at the start of the small intestine, which is where the pancreas is supposed to secrete enzymes naturally. If you wait to take them with food or (gasp!) after you've already eaten, you're not going to get any nutritive benefit from what you've eaten.

Here's the article on my blog: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://understandingcysticfibrosis.blogspot.com/2007/06/understanding-pancreatic-enzymes.html">http://understandingcysticfibr...ancreatic-enzymes.html</a>
