TEST RESULTS -POSTIVE I can't explain the fustration I feel today. I went for the gastric empying test yest, and found out by afternoon the results were postive. Now I am not gonna be a cry baby abt it, but I askd last week for any input here and got a few posts. I lookd up on line and they mentioned 2 drugs for treatment Reglan which worried me... and erythomycin which I have used in the past for infections, but all those mycim drugs are taboo to me... The article said sometimes this is viral? but the first reason was diabetes and I do not have that? Also sometimes there is not a reason, now how can something not have a reason?? I go to see the gastro doctor next Tues. I haven't had a BM since Wed. last night I did a old remedy took mineral oil. Which if my stomach is not moving the food to my small intestine why am I doing all this including the Myrolax, but I am still thinkg a stool softner will do something. So anyone with knowledge please pass it to me. I wld so appreciate. Someone did PM me but they have not wrote back, maybe they have not been on line? Pat-55/CF

Some gastroparesis is idiopathic, meaning we don't know what caused it, but there is a reason. Sometimes it can be caused by a mitochondrial disorder, vagus nerve damage from abdominal surgery, viral infections like mono, or fibromyalgias. I assume they have done a barium swallow and that was the positive test.

You're right that Reglan can have some pretty nasty side effects, but then letting go a gastroparesis carries pretty serious risks too. If you don't go the route of medication, you're left with surgical options, like j tubes or implanted gastric neurostimulators.

I have heard of them using viagra as an experimental treatment, as well as Remeron, which I assume would be the case if the gastroparesis was secondary to parkinsons.

I'm post-surgical at the moment and had taken a percocet so feel free to PM me if this doesn't make much sense. I should be better tomorrow.

I don't know much about it but I DO KNOW you don't need incompetent care. If your treating doctor(s) have little experience see if they will refer you to a university setting or practitioner who does. Believe me, lots of site members have been "screwed" by well meaning incompetence. Best of luck in getting the most competent care.
