Gene codes

I notice alot of you have the CF gene codes in your signature. What should I know about my daughters CF genes? As far as I have been told there is no way to tell how severe it will be. But when we were first told of her CF while my wife was 4 months pregnant during a test called a CVS (chronic villa sampling), they said that her mutation was moderate to severe. I am a little confused. Just want to be more prepared.

Chris father of 2
Colin no CF no carrier 3 and a half
Ella CF 7 months

Some people feel that knowing the gene mutations would help get an idea of what to expect with CF. There is not enough info to adequalty support this tho. CF will still be progressive no matter what mutations you have. Environment, compliance, attitude & luck play just as much in how the progression goes as the mutations themselves. Some people dont feel knowing the mutation is important. I feel it is something like your blood type. Its something you should at least know because you never know when the info will come in handy. If different research shows an influence on one specific mutation and it happens to be yours, but you dont know what your mutation is then you could lose out. This is just an example mind you.

Basically, what JazzysMom said. There are 5 different Classes of mutations, Class I being the "worst," Class V being the "mildest." It doesn't quite work that way though. I know my mutations simply so I could have them tattooed on me, and I like knowing dorky little things like that. But I didn't find out because I think it'll help with my care or anything. I don't think it'll help at all. It's just something I wanted to know because I'm a dork. Haha.

Just as an example, I'm 23 years old... I have a Class I, and a Class II. I still have 70% of my lung function. So I'm doing pretty damn well for someone with almost the worst mutation combination you can get (the only one worse would be two Class Is).

I actually have some information saved about exactly what the differences between the Classes are (like what malfunctions, etc). If you'd like to see it, yell, and I'll copy and paste.
