They will do an amniocentesis or similar (excuse spelling) to sample the amniotic fluid and determine whether your baby has CF. I'm not sure at what stage this is done, I think if they know what mutations you carry and they are relatively common, they can do it at approx. 12 weeks - I'm not 100% on this - please correct me if I am wrong.

Yep Sally, your close. I think they can do the testing as early as 10wks. They will prefer to do a cvs and if that's not possible they will then do the amnio. Both have a rate of miscarriage, so its up to you. Its usually suggested if you choose not to terminate the pregnancy with a positine result, then better of not to have the test. Unless you want to take the risk of miscarriage.

I f you have any more qusetions, don't hesitate toask.

I had an amnio done at about 20 weeks.. I chose to so i was a little bit better prepared.. but it is completely up to you.. shortly before i had the amnio ashton started showing echogenic bowel also.. which is an indicator of CF..

I had a CVS with both pregnancies. The first was done at about 13 weeks, the second at 11 or so. I found out the results the first time in about two weeks, and the second time only three days. We were continuing the pregnancy regardless of the results, but my husband and I both wanted to know what to expect. Our older daughter does not have CF, so we were able to enjoy the rest of my pregnancy without worrying. Our younger daughter does have CF, so we used the remainder of the pregnancy to learn everything we could about the disease. We found a clinic, a doctor, and used the time to mentally prepare ourselves and our families.

As far as the testing, the rate of miscarriage (these stats are a year old) is generally about .5% for amnios and 1% for CVS. However, and a BIG HOWEVER, these rates vary widely by doctor. We researched doctors who had performed the tests and found one who had a CVS miscarriage rate of less than .5%. From what I understand, the more they perform, and the more regularly they perform these procedures, the better they get at them.

If you have any other questions, let me know and I would be happy to answer them for you.

Best wishes,

Chorionic Villi Sampling, I hope the above link works. Basically like the amnio, but instead of collecting the fluid they collect fragments of the placentia.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but did you know you were carriers of the CF gene before you conceived?

Either CVS or amnio. Or you don't have to have a test, but if you are both carriers when the baby is born they can check the blood from the umbilical cord to see if the baby has CF, rather than waiting 6 weeks for a heal prick test.

I had a CVS done when i was 10 weeks pregnant to find out if our unborn child had CF, since we already had a son w/cf. Unfortunately, i ended up getting an infection from the CVS and miscarried a healthy, unaffected by CF, beautiful baby girl (Rylie Marie) when i was 18 weeks pregnant. This was so hard, as i blamed myself for this happening since we chose to have the CVS done. There are times i regret having the had the CVS done. But, for me and my husband at that time, we wanted to find out before she was born whether or not she had CF to prepare ourselves for parenting 2 children with CF. There is a slim chance, 1%, of miscarriage with this procedure. The doc who did my procedure only had like a .3% miscarriage rate with the ones she has done. Go figure. . . a 1 in 3,000 chance of having a child with CF and a 1% chance of miscarrying from a CVS. My husband and I seem to always be in that small percentage. I tell him maybe we should play the lottery. . . the odds would be in our favor! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Anyway, only you and your husband can decide what is best for the 2 of you. Good luck and our prayers will be with you! Regardless of whether or not the child is affected by CF, he/she is a precious gift from God, so enjoy each minute you have with him/her!
