germ worries

Danny started speech therapy last week. He usually leaves the end consonants off words so they are going to work with him to try and correct the problem. Anyway, he goes to a clinic type setting--waiting room, patient rooms, and a common area with a gym. The waiting room of course has toys and we can pretty much avoid them but the patient rooms all have lots of toys to get the kids talking and involved with the therapist. The thought of him playing with all these toys worries me. I don't want him catching something nasty after some sick kid has just played with them before him. There was tons of couging going on in the waiting room today. As soon as he's done I take him into the bathroom and wash his hands but is there anythng else I can do?

LOL!!.....I brought my son 1 month ago to the hospital for sinus surgery and to be admitted to the hospital for 9 days of IV antibiotic therapy. I was just so surprised that there is a communal playroom. There were Hand-Gel containers everywhere though! His last pediatrician had a sick playroom and a well playroom. That MD is where we made most of our complaints about our son's health...and thats were they were never acknowledged. My son's current pediatrician has one waiting room and plenty of sanitizing hand-gel dispensers. She is the one found out what was wrong with my son. Be careful of judging an MD..........Get a bunch of opinions!

Just looking at toy buckets in waiting rooms these days makes me feel like washing my hands [even without going near them]. Needless to say, I played with an awful lot of those toys when I was little. It can be beneficial to be exposed to a certain amount of germs from other kids, and of course there are socialisation benefits too. You could carry around some disposable baby wipes in your bag, or some of the soap that dissolves when you use it. Teach him not to put any toy or his hands near his mouth when he's playing...

I don't have kids so I don't know if this is a stupid suggestion, but perhaps you could buy some inexpensive toys or books for appointment days, and use those while you're waiting. I know that's not as good as playing with icky, dirty, toys but perhaps!

Anyway, a lot of us survived just fine playing with gross toys, if that's any consolation : )

I know no one wants to hear from my section of the peanut gallery, but you seem really worried, so let me just throw this out there:

A common cold or bug is not going to kill your son... CF or not. It's always beneficial to get a little bit of this and that. It helps to build an immune system. Like Emma Wuffles said, I played with that stuff when I was kid and I'm still doing well. *shrug*

I agree with Emma and Emily. (first saying i never played with the toys in hospital and my lungs have been very bad about all my life (fev1 25-33% from 8 years old..)

I think it's no CF clinic where your boy is going for his therapy? Then you could think of this as just the same as playschool or kindergarten or when he is older just school or a sportclub or camp or something where he will play with other children. And pick up some bugs that could give him a cold. He could even get that with going to a groceriestore with you..

The regular peds department still has toys in the waiting room, books in the exam rooms. I pretty much use the hand sanitizing foam after he's done and try to make sure there isn't any nose to mouth contact when Max goes hunting for boogers.

I guess I'd tell the therapists your concerns because there could be some children attending the clinic who are disabled and might have staph or mrsa... See if you could just bring along your own toys for them to use. Otherwise bring along wet ones or hand sanitizer.
