Gestational Diabetes

Hello All! I just finished my 1 hour glucose test and my levels were really high so they are sending me back for the 3 hour.  I am wondering if any CFer has had Gestational Diabetes...and if so what were the treatments for it?  My blood sugar has been all out of wack for a couple years now, but i am worried that now that i am pregnant a combination of CFRD and Gestational diabetes will hit me.  Just trying to figure out what to expect.  Did your gestational ever turn into CFRD?  Or did it go away after birth?  Any information would help!  Thanks!

I had gestational while pregnant, diagnosed after 3 hour test, with no known cfrd before pregnancy. My inexperienced with cf OB had me try doing a regular low carb diet and I started to lose weight after only a week or 2 and my sugar was still high so I had to start insulin and by that time my pulm dr stepped in and told me NOT to eliminate carbs and therefore I was taught to carb count so I could still eat whatever I wanted.

It was very scary and nerve racking learning to give my self a shot, it's not easy at first, especially when it has to go into your pregnant belly. I remember crying the first few times because I was about 26 weeks pregnant and I could feel my daughter moving and kicking my hand while I'm trying to stick this needle in my belly.

Unfortunately as much as I thought and hoped the diabetes was going to be over once I delivered, it didn't go away. Now 5 years later I still need insulin just about with everything I eat, but it is much easier to manage now especially with my pump.

Good luck, if you end up needing insulin, chances are it will only be temporary. I think I was just unlucky as usual. If you have any questions feel free to message me!

Thank you so much for all the information! That is what i was worried about, everything i read says to eliminate carbs, but that is so contradictory to what my CF doc has told me throughout the years. I will have my two docs converse (luckily they know each other) and go from there. Yea, the shot will freak me out. But thanks for preparing me mentally incase that is the situation! THANK YOU so very much!

Your welcome <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Definitely eliminating carbs or low carb diet like a normal pregnant or diabetic patient has to follow is no good for us especially at a time our body is demanding so much more. The only thing i've eliminated with carbs is drinks just because thats at least one thing you dont have to worry about thats going to raise your blood sugar, and its not like you're missing many calories there anyway. Except milk though we always need that and it has sugar/carbs but it is at least in it naturally.
Best if luck to you!!
