if i was going to look for a job that had good insurance, how would i go about finding out specifics of the insurance ahead of time? i mean, even if i know the company they go through, there are different policies. and how would i figure out how much my co-pays for meds would be?

any suggestions welcome.

You can ask to see the insurance packet before you accept any job. The should show you. I have never had a problem getting when going for a new job.

Don't rule out small companie though. I work for a relatively small family owned company and my benefits (medical and others) are amazing!

If you are considering any Federal government or state/local government jobs, the benefits information is usually readily available. Federal job info., for example is available in full details at the website opm.gov

For private firms, it's worth a try just calling the Personnel/Human Resources office to ask....some of them can be pretty helpful - after all, their job is to get people hired to do the company's work.

Christi,

Because they have now passed the HIPAA law they cannot hold you out for pre existing conditions if you have had coverage within the last 60 days -- if you go over 61 days yes they can hold you out for a maximum of 18 months. But if you go from one employer to another with a laps of less than 61 days you are covered -- the lawmakers put this in the law specifically so people could change jobs without penalty to their health insurance coverage (pre-existing clause)

And by they way -- (I believe this is true) NO health insurance company can ever keep anyone out of the policy for more than 18 months for any pre-existing condition. At least that is what I understood the social worker at our CF clinic to say many years ago. I thought he said it was a federal law.

Unfortunatly what Alyssa is saying is NOT true, atleast not everywhere.

Private insurance in my state can turn you down no matter what. Even if there is no lapse in coverage. They can also use riders on pre-existing conditions so that they never have to cover that condition.

Her info is correct for group insurance but not for private insurance.

I have been through this unfortunatly not bieng able to get insurance and we looked everywhere and at every law and NOTHING stops private insurance companies from doing either of those things...atleast not in my state. My dad is an insurance agent, has been my whole life, and nothing has changed even recently here regarding that.

Don't even get me started on HIPAA....

Becareful, the last company I worked for assured me they had great health insurance, and it was a big company.....But the insurance sucked.....It may have been good for the average person, but for al lthe meds and doctor apts a cfer has to deal with, it wasn't good at all.

In addition to the pre existing clauses for actually getting coverage be aware of limits on meds especially. I remember a family who had 2 kids with CF & they were on some type of HMO that limited the number of enzymes allowed each day. Some limit the quantity of meds & others go by the $$$ amount which of course adds up quickly. Its really hard to weed thru the policies that best fit a CFers needs. For me the meds are my primary concern. Without those I would be in the hospital much more. Good Luck!
