My name is Melissa and as you can all guess I have have CF,when I was a teen I wasnt affected so much by this desease but as I got older ive began to decline. As a kid and into my teen years I worked, and moved out by the time I was 17, I homeschooled myself and graduated high school and worked in the food industry.Unfortunately my coughing concerned some of the customers because they thought I was contageous. When I turned 18 I got very ill and my lung function dropped to 23%, I was hospitilized for a long time and I am now at 50%, I quit my job after this happened and havent been employed since.
I am afriad to be around people and have built this bubble around myself and secluded myself because I dont want to get sick.
I am now 22yo and currently in hospital for a 2 week tune up, my father came to visit me and always tells me about how some people with CF have 3 jobs or some climb mountains and that I should go to college and get a job, I want these things but when I have trouble even making the stairs it seems so far away, I have 3 sisters, two are going to college and the other is a mother, I feel like I am the odd one out and I am saddened that I cant make my dad proud.
I wanna be motivated and involved but i dont even know where to start, if any of you could offer me advice on things I can do in my current condition job wise or even volunteer I would appreciate it very much, I love helping others and it would bring some meaning to my life if i could make a diffrence in someone life.
sorry for the novel I wrote,Its just I know you guys get what im going through and I very much value you opinions.

thankyou

Hey Melissa, I totally sympathize with your situation. How often are you in the hospital? Also, I don't know any CFers with 3 jobs and the only ones I know that can climb a mountain are VERY healthy or have already had a transplant! Don't let your dad bring you down, you're succeeding just by keeping yourself reasonable healthy. Non-CFers just don't get how hard it is to even get out of bed some days!

Like you, I was pretty healthy all the way through high school also worked food service and had a couple people mention my coughing to my manager. Then I got a job at a big company with good benefits, including a long term disability plan. Two years ago, I had a big set back and lost my job. Now I'm on Social Security Disability. I've spent the last two years doing basically nothing, spending my days watching tv, running stupid errands, surfing the internet! I can only make it about 3 months in between hosp stays, that usually last 2 full weeks. I just recently found a job as a server at a local hotel that holds a lot of banquets and weddings. It's only one or two days per week. It keeps me active-ish, and if I feel like I have a coughing fit coming on, I hide in the kitchen or bathroom for a few minutes! I'm not out on the floor long enough for customers to realize I'm coughing, I'm also very open about my disease so all my co-workers know what's up and that I'm not contagious. As simple as a 2 day per week job is, it's made me feel like I have a purpose again. I also occasionally volunteer at the Humane Society because dogs and cats don't care if I cough! I would recommend finding something very part time if you want a job. If you want to go to school, take one class at a time and get in contact with the schools disability services. Or volunteer as much as you want and anywhere you want (except a hospital!) if you can't make a shift, what are they going to do? Fire you? I've also found hobbies to been a great way to get your mind off your health (I enjoy cooking, I'm in 3 book clubs, and I'm beginning to scrapbook) Do whatever you like! Good luck!

Hey Aimee
thankyou for your reply
I go in once a year usually between Nov-Feb, just that time of year when everyone seems to be getting ill.
Last night after posting this I called my Aunt, she is pretty active in my community and I asked her about volunteer jobs, she told me that I could volunteer at the public school cause there always looking for people to read to little kids, I love kids so I find that really exciting, altho in the back of my mind I keep thinking Kids=colds lol.
I think me and you have alot in common, right now im in the watching TV and surfing the net and doing things for friends and family rut, I tend to get comfortable in routine.
I think its really great that you are getting out there for even a day or two,I understand the struggle especially now,and its to bad we dont have any animal shelters close, I adore animals and they are much less judgemental then people, if you throw them a ball then your a good person
I have 3 dogs myself that keep me active, they dont let me sit on my butt.
Scrapbooking is fun I did it for a while until I ran out of pictures, now just gotta wait for time to pass and memories to happen so I can record them lol.
I was thinking of trying Yoga when I got out, never hurt to be more flexible I suppose
I just struggle sometimes getting people to understand that CF is diffrent in each person.
I think volunteering would bring more happiness i my life, I have a hard time answering when people ask "so what do you do?" least i will have something more to say then "surviving"

Take Care and I wish you the best,Breathe Easy

I was having a tough time this summer mentally and got involved in volunteering. I volunteer at a horse farm working with children with special needs. I absolutely LOVE it. The kids are so much fun and I am actually getting more exercise than normal. I am also spending time outside(which for now is good, but who knows once it gets cold...). I would also recommend looking into your local library. I thought of doing this, but fell in love with the horse farm. Also maybe a 'teen moms' program. I did that in college, a group of us would drive to where the moms lived (in a large apartment building, all in the same place) and we watched the babies while the moms got counseling on how to be good moms. That was SOOOOO rewarding and fulfilling. I wish I could have continued that work. A friend once told me 'volunteering is a great way to figure out what you want to do with your life." and I really think that is true. You find out what you love.

As far as a job, I work retail. I know its not the best thing for me, but this has also helped me to feel more involved in the community. It is a small boutique where I sell jewelry and clothing. I really get to know my customer and they tend to be repeat customers, so I see them over and over.

You said you like scrapbooking...what about taking a class at your local art store? Michaels offers all sorts of classes, You could even volunteer to help out at one. Or check your local YMCA for opportunities...they have lots of children's programs with probably fewer hours than schools.

I was having extreme anxiety before I started those two jobs. I didn't even want to leave the apartment at times, but now I am feeling great. I hardly have any anxiety and am really able to feel happy. Life with CF is harder than people realize. You constantly have that worry (about getting sick or not being able to accomplish all you want to) in the back of your mind on top of 'normal' everyday worries like money or car problems (just to name a few).

Melissa,
Kids DO = colds!! If I were you, I'd go to the school a few times on a trial basis, if you don't pick up a ton of bugs, keep going. But if it makes you sick (literally!) I'd rethink where you volunteer at. I don't want to deter you, I just don't want you to get sick. And you can't really fail at volunteering. Do what you can, when you can and they'll be appreciative of the help. I would love to volunteer at a cancer center or an HIV/AIDS program, but since both of those sets of people have compromised immune systems as well, I don't want to risk putting both of us at risk. Also, as far as yoga, I would recommend getting a yoga DVD and just do it at home with a friend or two. I signed up for a yoga class at community college one time and all the deep breathing made me cough a bunch. Which ordinarily wouldn't be too bad except that some people take yoga very seriously- too seriously. The instructor told me my coughing was "disruptive" to the class. I told her to shove it and never went back! I'd hate for you to run into the same problem. Don't be scared to tell people you have CF, you cough, no big deal. You get sick easy, no big deal. People are surprisingly understanding most of the time. They know it's not your fault and there's nothing you can do about it. It's gonna be okay.

Hey Melissa!

I am 21 and have CF. I too worked in the food industry as a cashier, however i found I was getting frequent colds as people still need to grocery shop even when they are sick! After 11 months I had to quit.

I also attended college for 1 year 2 days a week which wasnt hard for me to do. I made sure my classes started closer to noon times, as I cough most in the morning. After that, I decided to do an online course for Special Event Planning. I figured a job in this category could be outside, and you might be more mobile rather than sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day. It took a year, and it was SO EASY. I spent about 10 hours a week doing posts, readings and assignments. Sometimes it was hard to get motivated - do homework or go outside in the sun - but I did it! I finished in January and am just looking for a job now, as I have been taking it easy on PWD. So online schooling is an option if you prefer to avoid people who go to school sick!

I have done quite a bit of volunteering, and if you are looking to volunteer I would recommend something outdoors! Even if there is alot of people, I like to think the chances of catches colds decrease when you are outside. I have volunteered with the Dragon Boat Festival, Christmas parties, parades, Westside Daze (community event,) but my favorite to volunteer at is triathalons/marathons. I just look at my local website, search all the events happening, and email them!

I did hot yoga for a while, but I hated having a coughing attack in the middle of a class. Anyways, keep us posted on what you decide to do and where you volunteer if you do!
