getting a port.

after much careful decision making and loosing available veins in my arm for picc lines...i have decided on getting a port.
im so extremely nervous about this procedure but ive read fromn lots of others that it is not too horrible.
anyways i was wondering if anyone had pictures of their port that i could see...so i could see how big it is and what it looks like.
i have a round about idea about it but i would looove to see other cfers with it.
i already know they are putting in a pediatric port because im sooo tiny.
:]
and any ideas on showering when using port?

thanks much.

I am on my second port, my first one lasted 8 years. I have had this one for almost 2 years. If you want to email me at livingmydreams81@yahoo.com I can send you some pics of my port. I love it, its amazing and they are so much better and nicer then picc lines, you have much more freedom. They even put my last one in with me awake and just under pain meds, I didnt feel a thing!

hey i can email you pics too if you want. I am pretty small too, though I got a powerport and its kinda big... right now. once i get some weight on it wont be as noticeable.

I just got mine in septemeber and I love it so far, so much easier than getting picccs everytime you need ivs.

I have some pretty soon after i got it (though I was on a treatment tune up in the middle of getting mine so it was healing while being covered w/ a dressing for about a month)

oh and I did light sedation, but enough to where I was out but no tubes or anything. I didnt use any pain meds but mine just didnt hurt much to me. I didnt use the my vest for a couple days (had someone beat on me) and then I would just not strap the top strap of my vest after that for a couple weeks.

it is a pain to shower though, in fact I take a bath and just am careful not to splash water on it... but in the hospital they have like huge tegaderms and I would take gauze and a huge tegaderm and cover the whole thing and I could take showeres that way and nothing got wet or anything.

sorry so long, if you want to pm me your email I can send some pictures or something <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'd ask if the ped port is necessary and get some advice from other cfers on that one. I've heard from nurses that they are a _itch to hit on first try. Trust me...after the effort of havign this thing permanently installed in you, you want it to be accessible.

I have a low profile one. I'm glad I have it but I had some issues with it this previous round regarding accessing. It's painful when they have to make multiple attempts. My nurses try their hardest to get it accessed without exceeding the 3 stick rule. This soemtimes involves what I call "fishing." That's moving the needle under the skin without pulling the needle all the way out. Yep, it's as bad as it sounds. I'm only telling you all this so you consider getting it "regular" sized.

I'll try to post a picture soon.
