Getting a port...

All:

I currently have a PICC and have had so many problems with this line, but it is being pulled today! Woohoo! Hope it doesn't get stuck. .

I have made the decision to pursue getting a port; and the clinic wants to do it in the next few weeks while I'm "healthy" rather than sick.

My question to all of you is would you be interested in seeing a photo diary of sorts while I get this placed. I know I had tons of questions about it (and thank you Emily65Roses because you answered most of them), and I thought something like this might be helpful to other CF'ers contemplating a port.

Let me know what you all think.

You're welcome. And I personally don't need a photo diary, but I think for people who are thinking about getting one, it's an excellent idea.

Amy,

I would definitely be interested in a photo journal of the process! I've personally had a tough time finding images of the process & final result. At the rate I'm going w/ IV meds, I most likely will get one soon, and my research has not turned up as much info as I'd like.

Thanks!

I do have two pictures of what my port looks like now, after it has had time to heal. If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll post them.

Emily,

I would be interested in seeing your pics. Most of the images I find online are diagrams (not actual people), or a picture of the port, just by itself, not in a body....

Much appreciated,
Julia, 37, CF

I have a port and I have had it since I was pregnat with my daughter. I have had it since 2000. So march will be 6 years. My port looks nothing like your Emily. It is flat to my skin and I hve it located in my right upper lobe right above my right breast. You can not ever see it. Just the scar. That is all you see.

thats where i plan on getting my next one. just hasnt been working out having them under my boobs. not enough meat there and i keep lying on it. i thought i could hold off getting this one removed for a while but unfortunately it will need to be replaced sooner than later as i keep getting this weird bruising type pain especially if i lean back or twist my body [before it was just an ache that i could put up with]. the skin is also getting very thin

My daughter has had her port for 2 years. Her port does not stick out at all and is located under her left arm right below her arm pit. When she has her arm at her side you can't even tell that it is there. The surgeon did an excellent job and the scar is even gone - we started using scar patches immediately after it was healed and always placed alot of sunscreen over the scar for the first year (even under bathing suit) and the scar went completely away.

Emily,

Thanks for posting! I am curious about the location. I did not realize there were so many options on where to place it. Is there a specific reason they chose to place it there? Hope you don't mind my nosiness :)

Thanks everyone for the additional input. It helps a lot!
