Getting a port...

Curiousness on medical things, no matter how personal, is not nosiness to me. You can ask me anything you like. As for mine, I was not aware I had a choice on placement before I had the procedure. So the surgeon assumed, being an 18 year old female, I would care about wearing a tank top, etc, and would want to hide the port. I don't care, and the next one I get will be placed in a different area.

As I will be doing the photo diary thing....I am very interested in placement options. At the moment, the most important to me is areas where I can access it with NO help...any other feedback on this choice?

I am going next week...

As weirdly placed as it looks... I managed to find a way to access my port entirely by myself. I just had to learn how to hold my boob out of the way. I only have Mike do it now because he has a better view of it, and I like to give him that type of responsibility/trust. It makes him feel useful. But I can, if need be, do it all by myself.

Hmmm...interesting thoughts. I'm not so comfortable yet having hubby help me....although he probably would be happy at any chance to touch me or move my breasts around on purpose :).

Although if I had to choose a spot I would probably go in the boob area......I could ask for hubby's help who would be more than willing. HOWEVER; I would never get connected or disconnected (whatever the case might be at the time). LOL....men!

Mine is located above my right breast, it sticks out a little. Wherever a doc can find a suitable vein, a port can be placed. I know of one person who had one in her femoral area, her groin! I hope mine lasts for awhile, but the docs say I still have alot of viable veins to works with if that one fails for some reason. So far so good....good blood return, no infection or real pain, even when I accidentally bump it. The vest doesn't affect it either, but when it is accessed, I do pad it. Personally, it has been a godsend to me, no more PICCs, I have had way too many problems with those things. Emily, good pics...never seen a port located there. Docs also can "tunnel" the ports, mine is located in the subclavian vein, but the port is tunneled to my upper part of my breast.

You know the good thing about ports now is that they are making them smaller like the size of a smartie. Wich is awesome mine seems old school it is so big. It is under my right boob too. Just thought I would add that.

So, I'm going in next Wednesday, Feb 8th for the PORT.

For those of you who have/had one, do they put you under for it? How long does it take? I currently am only taking Wednesday off of work...do you think I should plan on more time?

Any other advice?

Thanks! Happy Friday
