Getting the most out of the vest

They will probably get you the Hill-Rom (I'm in Seattle too) unless you specifically ask for another one. I like my Hill-Rom and it does a great job getting that stuff loose for me to cough up.

I use mine for a minimum of 20 minutes twice a day. More if I feel like I need to. This is my routine: vest with HTS for 10 minutes (if I feel like I need to cough before the 10 minutes is up I stop it to do so). Rest/cough for about 5 minutes while still doing HTS. Another 10 minutes of vest (HTS finishes about halfway through this second round). But everyone has different preferences on the settings so you really have to play around and see what works for you.

I'll do another 10 minutes if I feel junky. It may take you some time to get used to it. I had to work my way up to what is considered the ideal settings (14 hertz and pressure at 4). I have been coughing up a lot more junk than before I started, and I just started in February.

Good luck! I hope you like it! Also, and RT will come out to show you how to use the thing!

I have the SmartVest and I use the settings Andee described above. I also copied them from Amy's blog. Thank you Amy! However I set my pressures much higher. Basically set your pressure as high as you can tolerate.

I found the middle of the road, CF Center recommendations (10, 12 and 14 Hz) did NOTHING for me. I hated my vest until I started using Amy's settings. Now it actually.....WORKS!

I huff, during the vest, but also in between each "setting" every five minutes. Which vest are you getting? If I had a choice, I'd love to try the Respirtech InCourage. It's supposed to be the top of the line out today. But I'm happy with the SmartVest. I'm not fond of the "The Vest" by Hill Rom.

Good luck! Fight for the model/brand that works best for YOU!

I don't know which model I'll be getting. My insurance is through an HMO, so there are some instances where they just aren't very flexible. My initial request was actually turned down (apparently I am the first CF patient my doctor has ever seen turned down) but my doc is confident they'll be able to get that decision reversed.

make sure to ask for the respirtech. you'd be surprised at how well they work with insurance companies.

in fact, call respirtech PRO ACTIVELY and get them working on your insurance. they can make it happen.

in terms of maximizing Vest usage, check out my blog from Dr. Warwick - the man who invented the vest. in addition to instructions on how to use it, you'll learn more about why you need a Respirtech.

why spend 1 hour a day, every day of your life, using an inferior device? Seems like a big investment in time to not be maximizing every minute!
