glycolax and miralax?

Hello,

My 15 month old has been on glycolax for about 1 month for constipation. We have decreased his dosage from four teaspoons a day to just two. I have a few questions:

1. Are glycolax and miralax the same? Is one brand name and one generic?
2. Should Bennett be on glycolax everyday as a preventative measure?
3. Should I worry about his system becoming dependent on this?
4. Is there anything natural you can recommend to keep his system moving beside prunes?

Our doctor instructed us to only give the miralax when he is really bound up.

Thanks! Hope you all had a nice holiday.

Hi! Umm... to answer your q's to the best of my ability:

Glycolax is the same as Miralax, just a generic version. My insurance only pays for glycolax, so that's what I've used for several years.

It's probably best to be on it daily. I usually use it twice daily, sometimes up to four times depending. Always twice a day though.

I wouldn't worry on ones system becoming dependent on laxatives. I read somewhere that once you use them for too long, your digestive tract forgets how to work naturally and hence you become dependent on laxatives. I don't think that actually happens to be honest with you... but ask the doc.

I am sometimes prescribed certain antibiotics if the miralax doesn't seem to be doing it's job. Or I'll do a round of Go-Litely.

Hope this helps.

I only take the Miralax 75 grms when I need it.. usually when symptoms present I start taking it and then take it for a few days or for how long I need to...

Hi Paula, I decided to take Sydney off glycolax this month after being put on it in July. I was worried about the dependancy issue - which according to GI docs can be a real problem (it can also keep the body from absorbing important nutrients bc it causes them to bind to the stool). Before you let this info freak you out though, I would ask your child's GI doc or do some basic reasearch on it yourself bc what you may find may not cause you any worry. Basically, I am pretty cautious (some may say anal, lol) about Sydney and what goes into her body so I decided to try going without and it has worked very well. The "P" fruits are good at keeping the bowels moving (peaches, pears, plums, prunes) and a high-fiber diet will help. Sydney will still eat babyfood fruits so I give her lots of that. Also, HollyCathryn takes a fiber supplement that she says works really well for her so if she doesn't post to this, you might try to contact her for info.

Hope this helps!

Hi Paula! My son is almost 4 mos old and has been on miralax (or actually glycolax) for about 8 weeks. He seems to do pretty well on it. I did want to share one thing with you that our doctor told us. Miralax/glycolax work from the top down. So he said if your child gets to built up it may not work. My son was taking 1 1/4 tsps every other day. Then he took 1 tsp every day...now he is on antibiotics for staph is and is back to 1 tsp every other day. I am not sure about the dependency issue...so I will have to look into it. Also before miralax my son was on what is called Enulose. Enulose is a natural sugar that your body does not absorb so it just pushes things through. It did not work very well for my son...but it might work for your little one...just a thought.

Paula:

Hi. I have a 4 year old with cf, Brady.

1. Are glycolax and miralax the same? Is one brand name and one generic?
Actually Brady started on Miralax and now he is on Glycolax- same thing just cheaper.

2. Should Bennett be on glycolax everyday as a preventative measure?

Brady has been on every day -1 capful with juice everyday and has been on it for over 2 years now.
He also takes enulose (lactulose) 2 tsp twice a day and has been on this over 3 years everyday.

3. Should I worry about his system becoming dependent on this?

With Brady we don't really have a choice, if he doesn't take everyday he gets blockages.

4. Is there anything natural you can recommend to keep his system moving beside prunes?

Brady is pretty picky when it comes to eating, as long as we do the glycolax & lactulose he does fine.

Good luck!

My daughter Samantha also takes Glycolax on a daily basis. I didn't like the idea either, but I have learned from experience. When she doesn't receive it everyday, she tends to begin to get blocked up. She stops stooling, gets crabby and often begins to vomit and spit up.
She has had to get admitted to clean her out with Go-Lightly (not a pleasant experience).

Our CF team has told us that like the lungs, the intestines also get mucous filled and don't move things the way they should. Besides the daily Glycolax they also encourage a good amount of liquids to keep things hydrated and moving.

Since we have started to give her a daily dose, Samantha has been much more regular and comfortable.
