Reece went to the dentist today & he has one cavity. They are gonna fill it tomorrow morning. They said they will probaly use laughing gas & a novacaine shot.

My Q is will this affect his breathing? I know when they put Cfers "under" the are concearned with their breathing. This just crossed my mind. Ive never had "happy gas" before, didnt know how it affects people.<img src="i/expressions/oxygen.gif" border="0">

When I was younger and my FEV1 were higher (above 40) than now, I took laughing gas. Gas just makes you feel relaxed and funny (I usually felt like I was flying), it's not gonna knock him out. I never had issues with it. They would usually give me gas and after the shots, they gave me oxygen to "clear out" the gas. But be careful, sometimes they turn it on too high and don't realize it. I've had that to happen and I would get bad nausea and headaches. I'm not sure what Reece's PFTs are, but before they did anything, I would talk to the dentist or call my CF doctor and ask about it. When I had some work done recently they were gonna give me laughing gas, I explained what my lung functions were and I told them I felt better if I didnt do the gas. They gave me a Rx for a drug to chill me out that I could take 30 mins before the appointment. Being that he is so young, I'm not sure if that is an option, but you could ask. If you do go with the gas, ask them can you be in there with him, to keep a check on his breathing. When he sees those shots, gas wont matter. I freak out on those shots and I am 25. I can take a shot anywhere, but not the mouth. Also, ask if they can put a numbing agent (it taste bad) on his gums before the shots, it will help some...not completely but some. Good luck!

Hey Leah,

I used to be a dental assistant. Hope this helps..

They are going to give Reece 50% nitrous oxide, 50% pure oxygen. I can't imagine the nitrous will cause breathing difficulty, as it is a natural relaxer. But, if you have any concerns, know that good dentists follow the following protocol:
1. they wait to see the patients tolerance before beginning the procedure. 2. they never leave the patient alone in the room while under anesthesia. and 3. They will listen to you!!! Try it out...give Reece 5 minutes on the nitrous. If he is showing signs of trouble, have the doc switch over to pure oxygen. (After the procedure they will always switch you over to breathing pure oxygen toward the end of your procedure while the nitrous wears off.)
And you can, if you are more comfortable, have an oral sedative. However, depending upon the time of your appt. you would probably need to reschedule your appt. in order to get the Rx in time and administer it.
Good luck, Leah!

I used it all growing up. I actually loved going to the dentist because of it.

They wont use it on me now because of my lower lung function.

If you arent sure....get a clearance from the CF doctor!

I am surprised they hadnt already asked that!
