Hi all,

Things have been so busy lately. I just started to go back to work, this part week. I plan on working per diem as an RN maybe once or twice a week. we need the income and I feel ready to go back to work. juggling work (even per diem) and two kids and all the treatments and such will be a challenge. I hope to take the personal experience of having a child with CF ingrain it in myself to make me a better and more caring nurse.

Maggie had her routine CF check-up last week and had her first "normal flora" culture in 1 1/2 years! I know that her MRSA is still there probobly in very low counts to grow in a culture but that's still good to hear. She just got off a couple weeks of anti's so I bet that's why her culturre was clear. Anyhow, she feels good and looks good so YEAH! She had a tough fall catching all the colds and coughs and stomach bugs from nursery school so it's good to know she's not growing anything new.

Hope everyone has a nice holiday and stays healthy.

Take care

Here's to clear cultures for the holidays. My boy (3 1/2) just won that lottery too. So nice not to be hauling Tobi cross country for the visit to Grandma's house.

wonderful news! An early christmas present!! Go Maggie!!

Briar...culturing isn't an exact science as bacteria can be present in other areas of the lungs which will not necessarily bring up sputum when cultured. Also, some bacterias like PA and Staph are present to some degree on and in the body at all times so culturing for staph doesn't always and for certain mean it is in the lungs. If they cultured you or I we could have staph as well. The issue in CF (and please anyone correct me if I am not explaining it well) is overgrowth of these bacterias as they can cause inflammation, chronic cough and eventually damage to the lung tissue. So they use cultures to keep an eye on what is typically present so that if your son were to say begin loosing weight for no reason, develop a chronic cough for no reason or a cold lingers for longer than 14days and is beginning to fever ect...they have an idea what he culutures and which antibiotic would be most appropriate. If he ever cultures PA, most clinics treat it whether or not there is a presentation of symptoms. Many other bacterias are a watch and see thing, at least at our clinic. My son always cultures staph but never has any lung issues. He cultured PA once and was treated with inhaled TOBI and just cleared his 3rd culture and is considered free of it at this time. He never showed any signs of PA or issues with it, they just don't want to give it a chance to set up shop so to speak.

Hope this helps.

Warmly,
