Good progression or bad?

Okay, M came home 8 months ago now, and was put on a vest within a week of homecoming. For 8 months, he has NEVER coughed while vesting, despite our trying to teach him how.

Well, this fall, he's been on antibiotics twice, just finished Levaquin 2 weeks ago but the cough went away a week before the course was finished.

I've noticed in the last 3 days that he's now coughing, but its exclusively while vesting. Is the vest finally, after 8 months, working gunk up like its supposed to? Or, is this from the cough he can't shake and needs to be addressed, likely with IV antibiotics this time?

In the meantime, his gut is not digesting sugars or fats at all, only protiens. We're 2 months into trying to get the testing completed to figure out what is going on because each test requires he be off antibiotics for at least 2 weeks before each test and we've only been able to get one scheduled each time before he ends up back on the antibiotics.

Normally, I'd just think this is the vest doing its job like its supposed to. But, when its coming off 3 months of battling this cough that keeps coming back, I'm a little leary of assuming that's what it is this time. But, it does seem to be almost exclusively when he's vesting (or bored but that's another story and I can tell that's a fake cough).

I remember when I was a kid, I hardly coughed at all during therapy (this is back when it had to be done by hand). I think that he hasn't been coughing for the past eight months simply because he didn't have that much to cough up.

So, I think the recent cough is from the infection he can't shake.

But of course that's really only a guess.

I agree with Mockingbird on this one. An icreased cough is an increased cough. Plus you said he's had a problem with a cough lately needing antibiotics. My son has had a vest for about 6 months or so and never really coughs either, but currently has a cough and is on levaquin, and it is causing him to cough.

Great. I've called the CF clinic...who just went to a central call center so I have another layer of idiots to wade through before I can even get TO his doctor now. He did Cipro, cough cleared up. Two weeks later, cough came back. Finished Levaquin 3 weeks ago, 3 days ago now, the cough came back. I was HOPING since its just happening when he's vesting that it wasn't the cough/infection back.

We can't do IV antibiotics. That requires a PICC line insertion. Since we aren't yet finalized on his adoption (we file the petition on Tuesday and wait for a court date), we have to have a court order for a PICC line insertion. Unless its a medical emergency, and given those idiots were letting him die and hadn't treated his PA once in the 3 years he was culturing it there, I can't imagine they would consider this a medical emergency.

He's scheduled to have his bottle rot repaired 12/2, and was supposed to finally get his hydrogen study to check lactase for digestion issues on 12/3, which has been a PITB to schedule because its requires he be off antibiotics for 2 weeks, which we can't seem to get longer than 2 weeks before this stupid cough keeps coming back.

Ugh...ugh...ugh.

I'll wait for his nurse to call back so I can explain what is going on and she can confer with his doctor.
