Great Strides 2007

Hi everyone. This will be our second year raising money for CFF. Our son, with CF, is only 9 months old so we are pretty new to all of this. We did participate in the 2006 Great Strides walk, but since he was diagnosed in March and the event took place in May we had little time to raise money. We did pretty well for the time we had, so we hope to raise more money/awareness for 2007. I was wondering if some of you that have had more experience with raising funds for CFF could tell me what has worked for you. I would love to hear all ideas! Thanks!

Well, I have done some fund raising, but not too much. The last couple of years I have sold the Plushland CF Bears. I kind of like that because then they are actually getting something for their money. The only bad thing about it is that you have to buy the bears yourself and you have to buy so many of each bear that you are buying. They are only $2.50 per bear (and then you sell them for $5.00), but it adds up quickly. I actually have had some at a bank that let me display them. I have to pick them up Monday so I'm not sure of my total sales yet. One year, my sister and I walked around my neighborhood and hers and just went door to door asking for donations. We are both shy, so that was kind of a hard one for us, but we did it. You might also think about a letter writting campaign.

I hope you have good luck!!

We are also new to this but we have become VERY involved in fundraising. Contact your local CFF chapter. They have great ideas. One of them that I am thinking of doing this year is going to the local pharmacy and asking them to put brocheres in with the prescriptions. You won't raise money for your team, but the more people we get involved in these walks the more money we raise to save our children!
Most years schools do fundraisers. Last year on of my mom's friends who works at a school had a dress down day and some of the money the kids raised went to our team. Since your boys are in school I would start contacting the school and see what they are willing to do. Again the CFF has a lot of great ideas for school fundraising.
Other than that....create a great letter and send it to EVERYONE you have ever known. You may be surprized at how many people come out of the woodworks. Ask them all to walk as well because the more people who walk...the more money you raise. Last year in 6 weeks we had about 20 walkers and raised over $10,000!!! You can do it...Good luck!

One more thing....e-mail works very well. Write another e-mail letter and send it to whoever's e-mail address you have and ask them to pass it on. I got a lot of donations last year from people I didn't even know that worked with friends, etc. People can be very generous and e-mail is a cheap and easy way to get to a lot of people.

Thank you for your responses and suggestions! We have also been very involved with our local CF chapter and have got some good ideas from them. Last year we only used email letter writing to raise funds. We raised a little over $4,000 in a month just doing that! We are currently working on getting some schools involved in the fundraising and I am planning on having a garage sale to benefit CFF this spring. Has anyone had any luck with local businesses and restaurants? If so, what events have you planned with them?

We have done fundraising each year. The letter writing campaign is the most effective and time efficient way to raise funds for us. We put a picture of our daughter and son on the letter and make it personal. We get donations from people we don't even know. It kind of ends up taking a life of it's own, year after year. For example a woman my dad works with saw the letter I sent to my dad and decided she wanted to fundraise, she raised $500 on her own and brought her whole family to the walk(7 year old twins & a 5 year old) walked with us and again I met her at the walk. I send the letter to everyone I can think of. E-mail is also good. We set up a webpage last year and people can even use their credit card to make a donation. It was super easy.

I also like people to "get" something back for donating, one year i bought like 50 of those blue Cf bracelets and everyone sho made a donation got one. My sisiter's friend made up "Maggie's Marcher's" t-shirts and for a donation you can get a t-shirt(people love those)

Just a couple weeks ago, i had a Tupperware party(my friend is a consultant). 40% of sales went to CFF. we made $400 for CFF in one night. It was very easy too. I just made sure I had plenty of wine and snacks for the ladies and we had a great time.

Also, other family and friends can walk in their part of the country if they don't live near you. I just got an e-mail from an old friend of mine who is a soccer coach in NY and she is setting up a Maggie's marcher's team for her soccer team and they are going to fundraise as well with a goal of $5,000.

Another friend of my SIL is planning on running the Boston Marathon in April for CF. You have to raise $2,500 to do this in Boston, Cool huh?

Year after year people come up with these ideas and it never ceases to amaze me.

My daughet's ballet teacher even said this year she want to sell flowers at her recital for CF(roses and carnations). parents buy them anyway for thier little dancers but this year it will benefit CFF.

Good luck

We have done two Great Strides walks since Aidan's diagnosis. The first walk, he was not even one year old. We had about 75-85 walkers on our team and our team alone raised $23,000 plus change.

The second year we had over 100 walkers with us and raised about $25,000! We do it through email and have a letter writing campaign. This year I have to try new things. I will let you know if anything else works.
