Great Strides

I go to two different walks every year. I've always been ok because it's outside and everyone there knows that I have CF.

We have gone every year in the past 17 years (since my nephew was born with CF--well before I had my own children). This will be our first year not attending since Kayla started culturing B. Cepacia.

When we had clinic last week I was discussing with the girls CF dr. about an adult who has CF who goes to our church and who is being evaluated for a lung tx. I spoke with his wife, and had some concerns regarding some bacteria that he cultured, as well as Kayla passing on her bacteria to him. (We attend different services so not a problem really)

Kayla and Hannah's CF dr. said that they do get concerned about schools and churches, but what really scares him is the Great Strides! That is the first time he has ever mentioned that to me-although it doesn't matter really b/c we can't go anyways. As we all know, just b/c the kiddos aren't culturing something, doesn't necessarily mean it's not there. Kayla has had a positive B. Cepacia culture, then a negative, and now two positives-all within less than six months.

I would think that as long as you do keep your CF kids with you at all times it should be ok. I know that our walk is always next to a huge playground, and the kids all love to go over and play on it. Definately not a good idea!

I'd been wondering about this too. There is a walk only 1/2 an hour from where we live and I would really like to go but wasn't sure about bringing Emily or not. I was going to ask her dr about it.

As there is with Tammy, there is a giant playscape at the park where our walk is too, as well as basketball courts, etc... I have never been to one of the walks before so don't know how they organize it- but imagine the kids will want to be THERE and my kids at their ages won't want to stay right with me w/ that stuff beckoning them, ya know? (8-12yrs old by then.)

I've seen lots of pen sharing, food serving utensil sharing, outdoor bathroom nob touching, etc over the many years i've gone to great strides events. oh yes and one CF mom will hug the other CF mom....

remember, just because you're outdoors doesn't mean bacteria don't stick on items that everyone touches. just because CFer's dont' touch doesn't mean that these CFer's aren't vulnerable... bacteria can easily be brought home but hugging, hand shaking, and even on your shoes (CFer's cough a LOT and you could easily step in microscopic sputum on the ground).

so i go, but i use my own pen, i wave and smile instead of hug (hard because I have a big instinct to shake hands and/or hug), and i ask someone else to serve me at the food area.

and like after clinic or a hospital stay, shoes stay outside my house for 4-5 days.

happy walking!

Edited to add: PA can survive on surfaces for DAYS, so areas like schools, churches and anywhere else a CFer can be is always an issue. even if you're not at a location for the same time, bacteria can hang out and infect another CFer long after you leave....
