Is the doctor requesting this a CF doctor? I dont know a lot about the growth hormone therapy, but it seems a bit much (to me) at this point. How old is your child?

Sean is currently participating in a study for growth hormone therapy. Unfortunately, he's in the group of kids not receiving the hormone but from what I understand the growth hormone therapy is really making a huge difference in the kids that are receiving the hormone shots. They are growing and their PFT's are better. Sean is hoping his Dr. will put him on the therapy once the study is complete.

Hello, I have twins with cf. no, they do not take a gh but our dr wants us to consider a g-tube. So, the g-tube did not help? Was there any weight gain? How under weight is your child? My boys are 8 yrs old and they weigh 44 pds. I am at the point of getting the tube because I am going crazy trying to get weight on these two. We have tried everything. They are currently on a med called magaze(unsure of the spelling) but it does not seem to be helping. Any suggestions that you have tried? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mother of twins with cf.

My son is 151/2 and has had a g-tube for 3 1/2 years - we too were advised to see and endocrinologist re: Growth Hormone Therapy. They do a test called a "bone age test" which consists of taking an x-ray of the patients wrist and determining how "old" the bones are - if they determine that the bone age is younger than the actual age of the child then they still have time to grow on their own but if they are as old as the child then they may consider GHT. My son had a hard time gaining weight even with the g-tube and was tested for diabetes as well. He took the OGGT test and tested positive for CF related diabetes. When he first started insulin shots he gained 11 lbs in 1 month! It's definately helped a lot. So that may be something to consider as well.
