Our local germ-a-phobe pulmonologist thought gymnastics would be the only suitable sport for DS to get involved in. He was horrified when DH mentioned football (grass), swimming or hockey (mold).... He's pretty much an odd one and we tend to ignore his drama. He doesn't know about the twice weekly swimming lessons. And I never would've considered signing Max up for gymnastics if it hadn't been for the dreaded toddler birthday party a few weeks ago. Mainly 'cuz it's not "manly" But, he kept begging us to go back and his father insists it'll help him with balance, etc. when he plays professional football.

So I signed him up for a 50 minute class once a week. To tell you the truth, the place smells like sweaty gymnasium, which it is and his running around without shoes and socks grosses me out. Class size is about 12 3-5 year olds and then they're divided up into smaller groups of 4. When we're all done, I wipe his hands off with a hand sanitizing wipe before he can get the nose to mouth contact started.

He loves it. He does a LOT of jumping around and he's goes to bed much earlier on those days.

Hey Liza,
I was just talking to my husband last night about signing up Ainsley for gymnastics, but I was worried that she wouldn't be ready for it, she's just 3 (jan. 21). Does your son like it? Is he able to keep up? Do you see any improvement in his breathing?

Your husbands a football buff too, eh? My husband has been a Colts fan his whole life and a Peyton Manning fan for as long as I've known him (Hence the name of our first-born). We're gearing up for this weekend - GO COLTS GO!!!!!

It was organized chaos. Basically it's repetition -- basic rules, beginning steps, placement of hands. His favorite was jumping into a "ball pit" filled with foam cubes and of course JUMPING on the trampoline. There were a couple of little girls who knew some of the basics, but he wasn't the only new kid. And he wasn't the only boy -- there were 3 others. Didn't seem to have any breathing or coughing problems. I liked the fact that he ate a huge lunch, fell right asleep at nap time and went to bed at a normal hour. I guess they have a parent/child class for 18 months to 3 1/2 years old, but this is beginners -- Tumble Tots. And in order to move on to other classes, they have to participate in 3 tumble tot sessions.

He was soooo excited about going there that he had problems listening. But that's been par for the course lately with toddlers and constantly reminding him to listen.

We just want to find some activities for him that he'll enjoy throughout life. Keep him active, keep him busy.

Both of my daughters did gymnastics, and loved it. I actually paid for a semi-private lesson on Saturday late mornings. There were hardly no kids there, and since they were the only two in the class, they got a lot of exercise and attention. Our CF doc loved the fact that they were doing gymnastics. They never had any problems with it, and it made them feel so good about themselves.

Hello All

I was the one who threw in the gymnastics question earlier then I decided to do some work (ha ha ha) so I just checked back for the response. Thank you so much. Very helpful info. I think that I am going to register him. I know that he will totally enjoy it. It's time for us to jump in head first. Thanks again

My daughter has been doing gymnastics for 2 years now. She loves it. I mentioned to her coach that she has cf. The coach actually went home and looked up what cf was. The next week she spoke with me, and she thinks gymnastics is perfect for my daughter. Now my 4 year old is in an advanced class 2 times a week with only a few kids. I think it is a great sport for kids.

Now that is what a coach should do IMHO! Good for you & your daughter....
