H1N1 shot

I just read Mel's post about the H1N1 flu shot (about NY mandating it for health care workers) and I am truly concerned. I assumed all the cf'ers are getting it. I have scheduled for Brady to get his on 10/8/09 the regular flu and H1N1 flu shots. Should I not be letting him get the H1N1 shot? Are there valid concerns about getting verses not getting it?

Let me know what you all think because I value all your thoughts on this.

I think there is always a concern with a new shot on the market and the likelihood of it being perfectly safe. From what I've read, while it is new, it is being manufactured just like the regular flu shot, just with the h1n1 its a different strain of the flu. So the experts feel this makes the h1n1 more likely to be safe from the start.

Ultimately I really have to do my reading and then trust in the people I've put in place to care for Alyssa. I'll listen to what her CF doctor, CFF and CDC recommend and then make our final decision.

There were a lot of H1N1 cases this summer when DS was in the hospital -- those children were on the same floor as we were, but in the isolation rooms. A couple times we heard a page for "dr. blue". So maybe I'm the odd one out here, but I'm anxiously awaiting the day we can go in and get vaccinated.

30,000 people in the US alone die from the flu every year. The H1N1 is very likely to kill more than that. While I'm not sure how many people die or suffer severe side affects from the flu vaccine every year, I'm sure the number is pretty small. The flu vaccine is new every year because their are different strains every year but it is very safe. H1N1 is just a different strain of flu so the vaccine should also be pretty safe.

The risk of the vaccine is much, much smaller than the risk of the flu. We are getting the shots as soon as we can.
