Had steaks of blood in sputum: Can I do albuterol treatment?

Today during a golf tournament, I noticed blood in my sputum! I almost freaked, however, this has happened a few times before in my life. I know when this happened in the past, my CF dr said to lay low, not encourage a cough, and definitely not do cpt or vest. HOWEVER, am I allowed to do an albuterol treatment to at least open things up and relax my chest? Does anyone know?

From my own experience, yes. That said, with hemoptysis you should always give your doctor a head's up that it's happening and have an emergency plan in place. For example, at my last hospital I was to go directly to IR bypassing the ER and I had my doctor's cell and pager to let him know we were enroute. Luckily it never happened but I did choose to get an embelization (BAE) due to its eventual daily occurance.

yep. albuterol shouldn't be a huge problem. if you notice it irritating your airways, stop it as well.

typically i don't stop treatments for streaking (only for full-on blood, like a mouthful or more), but other docs might have different approaches. mine tells me to stop pulmo and the vest for 24 hours. then she has me do a full treatment minus HTS and see how things go. HTS is always the last thing to be added back into the mix, b/c it's pretty irritating.

she always has me continue inhaled abx and albuterol. but again, if you start those things and they make you cough i might back off a little.

sorry this happened to you -- i know it's scary! hopefully you'll feel better soon. keep an eye on it though b/c sometimes hemo/streaking can mean inflammation and/or infection.

whenever i have coughed up blood my doctor doesnt stop my albuteral just my hypertonic saline, air way clearance and pulmozyme! i would double check with your doctor as well though. You also want to make sure it is not a sign of an infection starting to brew. Your doctor might recommend you get on an oral antibiotic or something to take care of any possible infection! Good luck!
God Bless!

I'm sorry, but I have to say, with the typo in the subject line, I had to laugh after I pondered, "how does one get steak blood in their sputum!?"

Sorry, again, I couldn't help myself. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Albuterol should be fine, but if it's going to make you cough, stick to something a little less invasive. If an albuterol neb will make you cough more, use a puffer...etc.

hope you start feeling better!

Thanks so much everyone for your replies!! And yes, I needed the laugh last night when I saw STEAKS instead of STREAKS posted! I agree with ya Erin!!!

I did postpone treatments and will be going to see Cf clinic in the morning. Streaking turned into full-out bleeding during night but not more than the limit which required me to go to ER. Sad since I've been feeling so great, but anxious to get there and get this figured out so I feel safe to take a big COUGH!! Thanks again everyone for your replies!!!
