haemophilus vaccine

There's a vaccine for this. Should CF'ers be vaccinated - sounds aweful! Anyone with advice for or against the vaccine? If you have it does your center take precautions with you not to expose other CF'ers to this?

Info from CDC website: Before the availability of the Haemophilus influenzae serotype b (Hib) conjugate vaccine in the United States and other industrialized countries, more than one-half of Hib cases presented as meningitis with fever, headache, and stiff neck. The remainder presented as cellulitis, arthritis, or sepsis. In developing countries, Hib is still a leading cause of bacterial pneumonia deaths in children.

I know DS was vaccinated for it as an infant -- it's a standard vaccine for small children -- HIB. Then I think when you're older there's a meningitis vaccine, which isn't required, but more and more people are opting to get it -- usually college aged people or those who are getting ready to go off to college 'cuz they're more suseptible.

I was shocked to see HIB show up on DS's culture results 'cuz he was vaccinated for it. Doctor didn't seem to concerned, but did add zithromax to his collection of drugs.

I have cultured H flu since I was diagnosed when I was 23. I am sure that I had for years and years prior. I didn't realize what it was until I started to research the last week when the oil of oregano didn't do anything to help clear it up. My staph cleared up but cultured plus 4 haemophilus. I have always cultured it and no one seems to be alarmed by it at clinic. I just assumed that was a normal bug that cf's have. No one else here seems to mention it and it has always been my worst problem. I only this year cultured PA and it seems we may have errandicated it with major TOBI and cipro. I will have to ask at my next visit about this. If anyone has any suggestions or input I would love to hear it.

Are you on Zithromax? DS's doctor mentioned that it helps with the HIB and in case you're exposed to someone with pertussis. Liza

I was on zithromax m-w-f until I got pregnant. After having baby went back on zithromax for 8 weeks and am now on amoxil to try and get rid of it. Amoxil never seemed to work before but I havn't used it in a while and I am seeing some improvement the past few days.

Hi Debbie

I have never heard of that drug before. All I cultured ever was h-flu and staph until this year started with PA. They never act like the h-flu is a big deal. I have never been hospitalized but now my fev1 is only 27%. I have only cultured PA once and they were very aggressive with it but never have been overly aggressive with the others that over the years have caused me all the grief. Up until last September my fev1 was stable for five years in the mid 40's. I was sick for two months and now am in the high 20's and can't seem to get any higher. I am worker really hard at it, I am hoping for some impovement at my visit at the end of Feb.

It is standard procedure that all infants get immunised against (Hib). I know my daughter did.
