Hair Loss (females)?

I'm wondering if any of the women here have trouble with hair loss. My doctor thought I was crazy when I asked him if any of my meds caused it because my hair was getting so thin, he said he hasn't heard any of my meds to do that and no one has complained. Well, I recently looked up the side effects of my meds and sure enough - one of them can cause hair loss!

My hair is brittle, as are my nails. I asked my doctor about it, and she said it could be related to medications and the fact that we're lacking in the fat soluble vitamins (apparently A and E are important to hair and nails). My hair still grows, but it won't grow past a certain point in my back. And it snaps and breaks all the time. It's gotten a little thinner in the past few years, but nothing that's really noticeable to anyone besides myself.

hair loss is quite common just from being sick. meds dont help either. not much you can do though except for hair loss shampoos that are expensive, and might not work. i spew at the thought of pantene! [bad stuff]

Well that pantene shampoo may not work for everyone. But it works for some people . So it's not nessary bad shampoo. So let other people try it before they make decison about that shampoo okay.

Hi, my name is alyssa. I have Cystic fibrosis. I have heard that it being common in most CFers. It happens to me sometimes. But my hair is very, very (very) thick (pathetically). I have to go get my hair thinned to make it thinner. But yes, dont worry hon, nothing is wrong it is common but if it gets out of hand (as in getting clumps of hair in your hand when washing hair) then you should consult your doctor about a new medication. I hope i helped. Good Luck!Love, Alyssa15f w/cf delta 508

gee settle down about the shampoo its not that big of a deal, its just shampoo. anyway, when hair falls out due to an illness or medication it takes 3 months to start growing again and then another 3 months for the new hair to become noticeable.

Examine your diet. It's true that meds can make your hair thin, but so does stress and diet. Your doc might not be able to give you a direct answer b/c it could be any number of things. When I was going through a really rough break up, I got real sick really fast, and my hair (which was usually shiny, bouncy and thick) became dull, flat and thin. I wasn't eating very well, but eventually I got my diet back in shape and that's also when I really got into yoga. Make sure you're getting enough calcium, maybe up your olive oil intake. Eat a variety of foods. If you're looking for a shampoo that's really full of fats and vitamins, try something with hemp oil in it. I use Rainshower shampoos and conditioners. They are available at health food stores, Wild Oats or Whole Foods. Debbie23 w/ CF

Hi. My name is Carolyn and am a 21 year-old college student. I don't have Cystic Fibrosis but I have very thin and fine hair. And I swear it is getting thinner. I know Cystic Fibrosis runs in my family and I might be a carrier--Could that be a possibility why my hair is thin? I didn't think that CF could cause thinning hair, or is it the meds that do that or a combination of both? And I didn't expect to find a message board on CF, but it's awesome! I was just surfing the web on the keywords "thin hair" to see what I can do to improve my thinning hair, and I found this

AHHH! my hair has been falling out SO BADLY! then i cut it REALLY short like..guy hair short...thinking the hair wouldnt be so bad...as in shedding wise...i was wrong...nobody cut your hair thinking the shedding wont be as bad...its just as bad... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Carolyn,
CF itself is not responsible for hair loss. There are many things that come with CF, such as poor absorbtion of nutriants, lack of fat soluble vitimins, medications that can cause the hir to thin. Not to mention STRESS(!)

If you are a carrier, and you should be checked to make sure, you may experiance other CF symptoms, depending on the mutation of the gene you carry. This isn't true for everyone, but it is not uncommon for carriers to have lung or pancreatic problems.
Being screened for CF is done with a blood test, in case you're wondering.

I'm a CF carrier as are my kids. We all have thin hair and poor nails. One daughter has constant constipation, I don't put on much weight despite eating like a pig. How can I find out about symptoms that are common in carriers.

I had a lot of hair loss this year. My air is thinnger then it use to be and for awhile I had to clean my hair brush out every day. I was worried about going bald at the rate it was going. Since I went off steroids & since my weight starting going back up my hair loss has decreased. Its still there, but nothing like it was.
