Hair Salons

Andrea,

Please don't take your five month old to a hair salon. Did you know that CF babies are born with normal lungs? But because of inflammation and infection, their airways begin to get damaged. A baby's immune system is also not yet mature, making them much more vulnerable to things that can inflame them. And you can't go by symptoms. Do you know that many people have moderate asthma and have no idea? This is because even normal people use 50% of their lungs. The other 50% is the reserve. So some people don't even feel any difference until their lung function gets down to near 50%. Recently my doctor tested one of her patients who was also a doctor who insisted he did not, could not, have asthma. His FEV1 was 69%!

The second point I want to make is the young woman on this site who was a hairdresser recently died. And if you read her blog, she even noted that her fast decline in part was due to her job. She said she had, "Hairdresser's Asthma" which apparently is common among hairdressers. Another young woman on this site very recently had to leave Beauty School after 9 or 10 months because she said she was also getting "Hairdresser's Asthma." She couldn't even have the very profession she longed for.

I wouldn't care what your doctor says. These salons use very harsh chemicals and a beauty salon is about the worst possible place for anyone with CF, let alone a baby.

I am a hairstylist and would say it is not really great for those with high sensitiities, things to really avoid, salons who also do nails, perms are very strong and harsh even for me who is not a cf'er, I don't even do them. Color wise it really depends on the size and frequency and ventalation., Plus the color itself. I use a color line that does not seem to boter any of my sensitive clients. I don't do nails, or perms in my salon, so there are never high fumes. If you can find someone who has similar place it would be fine. Also try to see if your hairstylist would come in on a Sunday or Monday where most likely there isn't many if any working and there won't be so much in the air.

I honestly would avoid it untill you lo is older and has more of an ability to handle small amounts, and then use those precautions

Thanks everyone for your replies and advice! My gut was telling me that it probably wasn't a good idea to take her along with me...but I just wanted to see what others experience was. Sometimes I just wonder if I am being overly cautious...probably not such a thing when your dealing with an infant with CF. I know that other people think I'm crazy...and thats ok...I have to do what I can to protect my daughter and I'm the only one that can do that ....she's not old enough to do it herself. Thanks again for the replies...I will leave her with grandma when it comes time to get my hair done!!

I work at a hair salon in oregon and i would say yes! Just pick an out of the way chair if you can away from bleach, hairspray, and perm chemcials just because of the smell mostly!! depending on the type of asthma she may have with cf or what? I would say that most salons are ventilated enough for the cf people but be cautious of the real busy chemical ones that are real smelly...sound good?
