yeah, I've noticed that with the home health nurse people. They use the handsanitizers before they change my dressing. I'm wondering now if I should say something next time. Is it just me, or do these people seriously annoy you anyways?

Actually hand sanatizer pretty much doesn't do anything. The bacteria is removed by the friction of rubbing your hands together and the combo of soap and the water temperature. I use to have an article about it, I'm going to see if I can look it up.

I NEVER use hand sanitizer inbetween my patients at work, I feel it's useless. I ALWAYS wash my hands rapidly with lots of soap and the hottest water I can tolerate.

Julie - what is the best way to approach a nurse about this? Do you think that the normal health care professional would agree to wash their hands or do you think they would get offended? I am just disgusted that they would only use hand sanitizer before changing a dressing on a picc.

I'd just tell them that you are a germaphobe <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> , and you have soap and water and a clean towel waiting for them in the kitchen-bathroom-wherever, and "thank you".

My home healthcare nurse even specified a type of handsoap that they prefered I have on hand to use for both myself and her to use when doing something with my picc.
