CF alone doesn't qualify you. If that was the case there would be tons of people who can run marathons parking in the handicapp spaces taking them up for those that need it. It all depends on how you feel and how sick you are. I got a parking permit back in December because my PFTs dropped so much and I get SOB walking too far. I didn't want it but my mom asked the social worker and they agreed I needed one (thats the last time I bring her to an appt hahaha). Of course I rarely use it because I feel bad knowing there are people out there who are worse than me that need it. But if I am having a really bad day or there are no parking spaces in a resonable distance I will use it. I think I have used it maybe 5 times LOL. My FEV1 is in the upper 30s right now.

As a side note. I would not consider you end stage CF. I am curious as to why your DR told you that you are? If that is the case then I am end stage as well and I know that isn't true. Also most CF drs suggest being at 50% as the absolute minimum for having children. Preferably higher to minimize the affects of the pregnancy. So yes you can be too sick for pregnancy but not sick enough for a handicapp parking permit.

Hi Cariann,

I live in California and the DMV has guidelines for people with lung disease who apply for handicap placards. In California the limit is set at an FEV1 less than 1 liter. For me (5'4" tall) that is about 33% FEV1. Anything above that FEV1 threshold and California has the right to refuse a handicap placard being issued to someone based solely on lung damage.

That being said, when I applied for my placard my FEV1 was about 1.55 Liters when healthy. (lower when I was exacerbated) I got my placard with my CF doctor's signature no questions asked. My FEV1 baseline is higher now, about 1.64 Liters and I use my placard a lot. It's not because I can't walk further to/from the store, it's because the shorter walk will save my energy so I'm able to do other things.

My suggestion would be bring a copy of your PFTs to a different doctor, not your CF doctor. Ask him/her to fill out the paperwork for you. Good luck.
