Handwashing

So, I went to the school today because Maggie was having a stomache ache(that's another story) and I stayed for recess and then the kids go to lunch...NONE of the kids wash hands before lunch....What is YOUR suggestion. I thought of buying handiwipes for Maggie's lunch box but still...All the kids should be washing their hands after recess and before lunch...Who would you bring this up to?

Thanks,
Rebecca

Eww! I think I'd mention it either to the teacher or to the principal. Might even say something to the school nurses. Especially with cold and flu season, etc. right around the corner and use it in that context.

ugh -- why, why, why wouldn't they have a policy to deal with this? We had to sign a permission form for our kids to be given purell throughout the day and before/after lunch. Purell isn't as good as soap and water, but at least I know it gets done most of the time. I even got a huge commercial bottle of purell (I have a friend who works for gojo, the company that makes purell) for each of their teacher's rooms.

I'm having the same issue at DD school. They don't use soap and water before lunch and snacks. They use hand sanitizer instead. I asked the doctor at her last appt and he said that hand sanitaizer kills prettey much everything but c diff. That is not what I hear in the news last weak. According to a study at Univesity of Virginia hand sanitizer doesn't kill the common cold viruses. Please I need more info about all this.

I agree with Liza. Talk with the teacher, mention it to the nurse, bring it up to the principal, go to the school board. Kinda in that order if you don't see changes. That is completely gross and completely unsanitary for all kids, not just CF kids. Mention that it is not just for the health of your child but all the children. Not to mention it is a good time to teach these kids a habit that will carry them through life.

Hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available not as a subsitute, is my opinion.

I just interrogated DS to see what he does when he comes in from recess 'cuz his lunch is after it as well. First he told me "I don't know", but then fessed up that they have a handwashing station. Phew!
