Has anyone else had to fight with their insurance company to cover each person on the CF Team

Hi there,

As you may remember I posted a couple weeks ago looking for help with fighting our insurance co. to cover the nutrionist. I have since appealed. Now,this weekend we recieved a letter from the insurance co. saying they will not cover the Social Worker. I since have made calls to have our CF Social Worker write a letter explaining what she does for our family.

My question is whats next that they won't they cover? If we have to pay out of pocket for each member of the team. CF Clinic could get very expensive! I'm wondering if any of you pay out of pocket for your childrens nutrionist and social worker? If so do you see them every three months. Or can I ask just to schedule them once or twice a year? I know my husband makes to much income for us to use any other resources out there. I'm just trying to figure out what some other familes have done when they run into this problem. Thanks, Sarah

Has anyone else had to fight with their insurance company to cover each person on the CF Team

When we went to the local CF clinic, there was information provided that the dietician was no longer going to be covered, so we could opt out if we wanted. We just ended up paying the $50 out of pocket twice a year; however, we no longer go to that facility. We DID have to fight with insurance about DS' synagis shots for RSV when he was a baby and THAT took a letter from our attorney to get it covered. We argued, called, sent letters, had the clinic send letters and within minutes of receiving a fax from our attorney, they covered the shots.

I am not suprised that the insurance company is trying to get out of paying for the nutritionist and social worker (I worked for Blue Cross for 4 years and unfortunately can say first hand that insurance companies will try to get out of paying for anything they can)...

What does suprise me, however, is that you are even being billed for those services. Isn't that just part of the CF visit? I have two daughters with CF and we've moved quite a bit so we've been to 5 different CF Centers over the years. We've always seen nutritionists and social workers but have never seen a charge from any of them. It is just lumped in under the visit charge from the doctor. We get separate bills for things like lab work and x-rays, but never from the nutritionist or social worker. That amazes me.

Sorry, I have no real advice to offer, I just can't believe the CF Center allows the nutritionist and social worker to bill separately for those services... Is that common practice?

I find this amazing/interesting also. Our Nutritionist & Social Worker are part of the clinic visit. There services are not build seperately.

You would think given the need & the potential for insurance difficulties with CFers that it would be all covered on the CLINIC billing/fee!
