Hey everyone...a few years ago I was diagnosed with MAC and told the only treatment is an 18 month course of 3 different antibiotics. At the time I refused the treatment because I was trying to get pregnant and of course couldn't be on all those meds with pregnancy. Well, now I had the baby and I'm still debating getting treated. I think the meds are: cipro, biaxin (i think) and one other one. All oral!! My stomach can't tolerate either of those for more that 3-4 days I can't imagine 18 months. Has anyone ever done this treatment??

Hi Kris,

My boys were treated for a mycobacterium with Bactrim, Rifabutin and imipenem (IV). They have been on the two orals for one year and were on the imipenem for 6 months. They showed remarkable improvement in the CT scans (80%) and are feeling very well.

I found that the NTM forum was very helpful in answering questions about treatments, symptoms and side-effects. Here is the link:

Sorry I can't help out here...the only "MACs" I know are
Big MAC
MAC address
and MAC computer

hope that's not a serious illness, though-sounds about as rough as MSRA, however

hope there's an alternative for something that will agree with your system!

What a coincidence that this topic popped up now - my daughter was just diagnosed with MAC. I had never heard about it before.

She has started taking rifampin, ethambutol, and zithro (all oral) for at least the next year. She is also on flagyl, levaquin and iv colistin for an infection for the next six weeks.

One of these meds is making her very sick and "weird" feeling. She keeps checking her blood sugar, since she says it feels as though she is way too low (but she is not).

Hopefully we can quickly pinpoint which drug (drugs?) is causing the sickness and figure out a solution, since it did not sound like we have alternatives. It may be a very long year....

Jane - it was great to hear that your boys improved. Any encouraging information is appreciated !
