Has anyone ever cultured "Kennel Cough"

My 3 year old has cultured Kennel Cough (bordetella bronchisettica) and we (his nurse and I) believe that I had it at the same time (and when I look at symptoms (for dogs! lol!), it's exactly dead on. This is so odd! I'm 99.9% sure that I know where it came from...our puppy (that no longer lives with us). Other than this, his culture was normal flora (and this was the first non-normal bacteria he has cultured).

I'm just wondering if anyone else has cultured this?????

My other question would be...the nurse said they usually treat w/ zithromax (and coincidentally, that's what he was given at the time), but his culture was taken about 2-3 weeks after we were sick (and since he had had zithromax). Sorry if this is confusing, I'm a bit confused myself )

Thank you in advance as I truly value all of your opinions )

Gosh, I've only heard about it when you're talking about dogs. I had no idea people could get it!!! Geez.

Hopefully the meds take care of it quickly.

Thank you In that picture (from Great Strides) he has one of Allie's shirts on ("Aren't I worth a Cure?") Everyone loved it!

I should have mentioned that he now has NO symptoms at all. There for awhile, he and I just had a horrible, lingering cough (mine lasted longer).

Forgive me, but I sort of laughed at the topic title. It made me
think of that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer gets the same
infection as the dog and ends up taking himself to a vet for
treatment.

I can laugh because I also have cultured Kennel Cough. The
antibiotics did the trick and I got well reasonably quickly. And
yes, I did get it from a canine. That was a few years back when I
was in college and just getting hip to the Zithromax stuff. I'm
presuming your little one is on the liquid form of it?

I have not cultured Kennel Cough since. I'm not sure what the
likelyhood is of culturing it again once you've gotten it. Over the
years I've had to get rid of more than a few pets because they were
harming my health. It's even suspected that I got cepacia from one
of those little African Dwarf frog habitats that I bought at the
mall once.

I hope your kidlet feels better soon. The cough is difficult to
hear though isn't it? It's so wrenching! The nice part for me
though was that coughing so hard and so productively really cleared
me out.

LOL! Gotta love Seinfeld That did make me smile!

Yes, the weird thing is...is that, at least from the sound (and what I can remember), I had it worse than he did...maybe b/c he had all of the other treatments to protect him a little better? But, yes, the cough was a nasty one!

Thank you...makes me feel a little better that he wasn't the only one that ever cultured it! lol!

We put our dog into kennels twice a year, and they don't insist on having the dogs vacinated for kennel cough as it is given as a squirt up the nostrils and most dogs do not like it, our dog certainly hates it done. The kennels has been kennel cough clear for over 20 years, but this now worries me, do we revert back to a kennel that insists on the treatment or stay where we are?

When Craig was first dx, I asked the doctor If having a dog will cause problems, he said only if they have an allergy to the dog. We go to clinic next Monday I'll need to ask him about this.

Craig,

I had heard the same thing (about allergies) and NEVER, EVER thought about Kennel Cough. His nurse just said "so don't let the doggies kiss him anymore" (which I didn't prefer in the first place). We no longer have the puppy (my dad has her now)...but this does now worry me. I have to believe that the puppy must've had a pretty serious form of it to have ME and my son contract it??????

This is interesting to know. It must be fairly uncommon considering the number of dogs I have owned or been around & let me kiss me (go ahead & get gross with the ewwws I know) & never had a knowing problem!

I imagine this has to be such an unusual occurrance. Geeeeeeeeezzzzzz I'm 41 and have had animals my whole life and never heard of THIS possibility. I guess anything really IS possible like they always say. I'm glad Ethan is doing better What a cutie !!!!

Do you mean Bordetella bronchiseptica? Cause, if so, it sounds like it is one of the causes of kennel cough and a second cousing to pertusis ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bordetella_bronchiseptica ).
I found one article about someone with CF having it ( http://jcm.asm.org/cgi/content/full/40/6/2300 ) and lots more with folks who are immunosuppressed (from aids or transplant meds) getting it.
I suppose that's another reason why they're not keen on having transplant patients living with pets.

No never heard of that. But I guess anything could be possible.
I'm wondering if you vaccine against that for your dog? I vaccine against it b/c my doc shows and boards at alot of places. I think the vax's are good in general, with dogs picking up weird viruses and bacteria anywhere, just to keep it more germ free.

A little off subject, but my sister brings her dog 2x per month to the groomer's or vet's (?) for a special shampoo that stops hair and dander shedding, that helps her with allergies and such.

up the nose? i have never heard of that. kennel cough vaccine is usually an injection.

Yeah they have it up the nose now and it delivers quicker than the injection. The injection protects after a week or so and the spray delivers around three days later.
I would be leary of any boarder than doesn't require the vaccine. (just me though)

Thank you all for the replies!

LisaV...when I looked it up, all I found was "bronchiseptica" too, but when I asked for the spelling from the nurse, she gave me "bronchisettica"...unless I was just so shocked from what she was telling me, that I wrote it down wrong! lol! Now that I look at it, she probably did say "p" and not "t". I think I'm slowly losing it! lol!!!

Thank you to everyone...I do assume that the puppy had this before she was vaccinated. (she's up to date now)...but I'm still leary of letting Ethan around her until she's checked, obviously.

Again, I do thank you all for replying...you are a great help to me more often than you know!

Ous sons doctor tells me that the ''bordetella'' is a group of bacterias that cause whooping cough, and he has never heard of a human getting kennel cough, he says that humans can catch all the other stuff that you would link to dogs. He will look it up more, he is that type of person, I have intrigued him with this question. Next visit he will have a really comprhensive answer.

Years ago our dog got kennel cough and we vaccinated him every year because we boarded him at a kennel which required it. It seems that Kennel Cough is made up of several different viruses -- sorta like the flu -- the create a vaccine based on the most common viruses dogs catch.

BTW, someone on healthboards posted several months ago that they had a new puppy with pseudomonas, which freaked me out briefly. I know dogs can carry strep and pass that on to people. In our case, we just didn't let it worry us, too much.
