have a cold, coughing all night

i have the drainage pretty bad without a cold ,so with a cold its bad. i end up having to take something .i start out with zyrtec, then if that doesnt work i take some type of cough sryup. i have tussinex, but that is really dangerous for the lung .(for me anyway ) it makes everything thicker. i take half the dosage.
