Have you or your child cultured Staphylococcus aureus?

I got a call from the CF Clinic last night saying that my daughter cultured Staphylococcus aureus. I was told it is nothing to worry about and that it is the somthing they see often in CF'ers. I was told that many clinics don't treat it, but my clinic does. So they put her on an antibiotic for 3 weeks.

Just curious if any of you have experience with it and what you know about it.

Thank you.

That is one of the first things that both my girls cultured. I think that for kids with CF, it is normally one of the first things that pop up. Our clinic did not treat for it just because they cultured it. But, if they began having symptoms, such as an increase in cough, and I would call them, they would begin treating them based on the culture results and what the Staph would show it is resistant to.

Maggie has cultured staph aureus. At the time, she was coughing they put her on an antibiotic for 2 weeks and she stopped coughing felt alot better. Her staph is only treated for symptoms as well. Staph aureus is everywhere, on our skin in the environment. Very common to culture. I request a copy of Maggie's culture and sensitivity report whenever she cultures something new because I want to know what antibiotics she's sensitive to. One time, someone filed someone else's culture report in Maggie's chart... So, the doc started telling me she's culturing something and it had the wrong name on it. OOps. He was embarrased. It happens. ANyway, I like to see the report with my own eyes now.

Yup -- our doc says my daughter is "chronically cultures" with staph. We treat it ONLY when she has symptoms. I wish they would treat it all the time (though I understand why they don't) because she always gains weight so much better after we kick out the staph. But it comes back pretty quickly and from what I understand if you treat the staph too much, you open the door for pseudomonas to creep in.
