Have you or your child cultured Staphylococcus aureus?

Hi Marla,
Andrew always cultures staph....ever since he was itty bitty.

Like everyone else has said, it is common to only treat the staph when patients are symptomatic. Perhaps because this is your first positive culture with it, they are trying to eradicate it. However, if it becomes something she cultures all the time, they will probably just let it stay put until it causes a problem.

It is so confusing to figure out why some things are treated right away and others are not. You will continue to have these questions every time your daughter cultures something new. It's so nice to have experienced parents to turn to!

Good luck and let us know how her next culture turns out!

my daughter cultured staph numerous times before her diagnosis and only a few times after her diagnosis. Since starting pulmozyme, vest, hypertontic saline and being more careful with hand washing, she hasn't have a lung infection for 2 years now.

It's the only bug I culture for. My doc doesn't treat it, I was told specifically to not take antibiotics unless I'm positive I'm getting sick and can't fight it by resting. Right now that is maybe once a year. I eat a lot of garlic (I cook with it) nearly every day which helps a lot, and I love nebbing hypertonic saline when my throat or sinuses feel irritated. I use 7%. My baby is waking up and pulling on my mask, PM me if any questions.

Hi Heather,

You are right. However, not only do you open the door for pseudomonas, which they usually eventually get anyways, but the thing that I worry about more, is that you open the door for MRSA (Multi-Drug Resistant Staph Aureus). Nathan just recently grew pseduomonas, but I always worry more about the MRSA because I know that a large percentage of CFer's eventually grow pseduomonas.
