Hi, Casey. My youngest (4) just had her surgery a month ago. She also had her adeneoids out as well. She had the surgery as an outpatient procedure. We brought her in early, she had the sedation, then, as others said, they drained out the sinuses. In her case, they also tried to open up the drainage passageways, so she would drain out of her sinuses better.

She was done and we were on the way home that afternoon.

She was in a lot of pain immediately after, but they gave her strong painkillers and that seemed to take care of it. Her pain seemed gone within about 24 hours. She was supposed to take it easy for a week; the hardest part was keeping her settled down, because she felt fine by day two.

The main side effect we had was bloody discharge for several weeks after. This was not new blood; it was old and brown. It was just the scar tissue washing away. There was no visible sign of the surgery, other than that.

She did daily, warm sinus rinses to keep the nose moist and to help remove the packing (to keep the passageway from scarring over) and the scar tissue.

At first, we were a little worried, because with the packing and the swelling, she still was not breathing very well out of her nose. Now that it has been about six weeks, though, we can really see the difference. She even said "I can breathe through my nose!"; She was surprised, I don't think she has been able to do that well since birth!

I was expecting a more complicated procedure and a longer recovery than she had. So far, we are really pleased with the results.
