I am a mother of a CF child. She is 11 soon to be 12. I just got her a bird for her birthday, it is a Sun Conure. I was talking on the phone to one of my friends, her daughter has CF. She told me that birds are the worst kind of pet to have. So I was wanting to find out more about birds and CF. Can any one tell me if they are Good OR BAD. They are in her room, because that is the only pace in the house that is safe for them. Because we have 2 cars and a dog. Please help with my problem.
Thank you krwilliams:

this is one of those subjects where your gonna get a yes they are ok from some ppl and a no way from others.. my personal opinion is that i wouldnt have it in you childs room.. and make sure cage is clean and your child washes hands after handling.....

I don't think birds in themselves are a problem; I know that their poop can be. It can 'dry' and become dust, which is not good to inhale. If you are very diligent in cleaning their poop, I don't think they'd be a problem. Maybe ask your CF doc?

i love sun conures! theres always a sun conure at the petstore where i get my cat litter from and they are so gorgeous. as soon as i go in there i pop one on my shoulder and let them eat my hair. id be hesitant to have a bird in a bedroom regardless of cf or not. not only is the person more at risk of bird diseases [even though the risk is extremely small] but its also not really good for a bird to be in a tiny room anyway. boredom in birds doesnt go down too well. why dont you put up a high shelf in a larger room and one outside too? in summer it can go outside and in winter it can come inside and it will be well above where the other pets can reach. buy those sandpaper perch covers and change them twice a week [or get some twigs from somewhere and change them twice a week] and clean the rest of the cage once a week. use a plastic cage bottom cover to stop the bird from kicking out poop, shell grit, seed etc.

i guess i should explain what those things are..

heres the perch covers. they are pretty expensive to replace all the time so id use twigs and brances. twigs are better for the birds feet anyway and you can ditch them the minute they get dirty. <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.petco.com/product_info.asp?sku=4258344014&dept_id=%2D2

heres the covers. you can easily make one. there are also ones that look like giant showercaps that go on underneath. <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://i13.ebayimg.com/03/i/03/22/c5/c4_1_sbl.JPG
