head colds and coughing

So Grant has been on and off of antibiotics since October. He will finish a three week course and then about a week later it starts all over. He usually starts with just cold symptoms that progresses into a junky sounding cough. About a week ago he started with a head cold with clear nasal drainage and no cough. Several days into it he started coughing but only a couple times a day and mostly it was just in the morning.

I decided to call the clinic to just give them a heads up and was told to just watch it and increase treatments. It seemed to be working great. I totally had myself convinced that it was viral until this morning. He was coughing so much and then vomited a lot of mucous. Also he has had a lot of nasal drainage that is now thick and green. When he coughs it doesn't sound like a deep cough it sounds like he is coughing from all the nasal drainage that is going down his throat. Do you think it may be his sinuses? Any input would be great. I guess I'll call the clinic to see if he should start an antibiotic.

Thanks for any input. He has had a rough couple of months and I'm feeling really overwhelmed. Thanks again

DS mainly had sinus issues early on. We'd have to go after him with the dreaded booger sucker until he finally learned how to do sinus rinses at age 4. He did get put on abx for a month to clear a sinus infection he'd had all winter. His doctor was concerned with it draining and possibly getting into his lungs.

oh missy do i knw exactly how u feel....the past 4 months for aidan and us have sucked royaly. he was goin thru the exact same thing. it wuld start out as sinus symptoms. and i wuld do everything i culd to get it under control but then eventually it wuld turn into a cough. so onto abx we wuld go. two weeks of that and when he was done 3 days later the same symptoms wuld come back sometimes with new ones you know just for fun. like it isnt hard enough to determine what is goin on with this freakin disease. so back on a different abx. 3 weeks of that and when he was done that time we went a whole whoppin week before symptoms came back cold related this time but of course it was nasty coughing in his sleep and in the morning like urs to the the point that aidan was turning a lovely shade of purple and shaking he was coughing so hard.

so now it was time to go in for a check up and based on everything that happened and him not responding to the abx we decided it was time for a bronchi. now his doc did say that we probably wuld need to see an ENT doc but lets do the bronch first get a sample and see if there is a bug in there were not getting on regular sputum. so results from bronchi was pseudo. well now we had an answer as much as it sucked and i was devastated cause now hes colinized with it we culd treat it with the responsive meds. of course that meant another picc line cause he had been on oral for over a month it was time to bring out the big guns. so 2 weeks of iv at home and by day 5 i saw major improvment. the line was pulled bout a month ago and he is all better ofcourse now were on cayston one month on and month off but no more repeats.

im not trying to scare u or say this is whats happy with ur baby but i just wanted to share my recent experience. maybe u will get some help from it. oh and i knw all bout being completly stressed and ready to breakdown. the meds this time for his iv were different from the last one different hours of administerin them. i was sleepin in 2 or 3 hour incriments at night before i culd go to bed and get up at 6 and do it all over again. hang in there. breathe. take a hot bath. cry scream do what u hav to do. i knw i do. keep us informed.

Oh no, Grant is sick again, I'm so sorry to hear this Missy. He really has had a tough couple of months. Has he ever done IVs? What does he normally culture? It kinda sounds like he did get a virus that kicked up whatever bug has been growing in his lungs.

This is not a good way to start the new year. I hope that he responds well to orals, but gosh, wasn't he just on Bactrim in Nov? Poor kiddo and mom.

We have our annual visit on Wednesday, so if you are going to be there, let me know and I'll come say hi.

Heather, thanks for your response. Your always so supportive. To answer your question Grant has never done Ivs. He cultures staph auerus(his last culture was in Nov). He was started on bactrim in November but sadly he was allergic to it. After that he was prescribed Keflex which worked for about two weeks until he came down with something else. At that time he was given augmentin which worked well. It worries me because he is always prescribed augmentin. I don't want him to become resistant. Grant has been doing good this evening, he hasn't coughed and his nose is not running. It seems to be worse in the morning. thanks again

From how you describe it, it does sound like it could be a sinus infection. Checking in with his cf dr sounds like a good idea; it sounds like he needs something to help clear it up before it has a chance to spread to his lungs. He's too young for the sinus rinses, but have you tried using the saline sprays (which can work better than the drops- the mist gets farther up there) and letting it sit in there a while and then trying to suck out whatever you can? I hope he's feeling better soon!

Emily had issues more often with ear and sinus infections as a toddler than she did with bronchial stuff.
