Heart Problems

I am being tested for fast pulse. The last two clinic appointments they have found my heart racing. I had an EKG and they only confirmed my racing heart. They want to do an ultrasound of my heart now.

Anyone else with CF have a heart problem/condition?? If so what caused it (if I may ask)??

Wow I can't believe that they are testing you for something. My doctor always just blows it off and says that it is common. It is good that you are getting it checked out. My pulse never goes below 100 even when I am resting. If I am moving it gets very high. I just always assumed it was because I have trouble breathing so everything else works overtime.

My resting heart rate when I'm feeling good is usually 100-110. When I get sick it is around 120-125, and frequently gets into the 140's/50's if I am up walking around in the hospital. When you say racing, how fast are you talking? I also had AVNRT, which meant that my heart would occasionally break into a gallop around 230+, which was really scary, but I had an ablation in June to fix that and it hasn't happened since.

The typical drug to slow down your heart is a beta blocker, and I've been told by a cardiologist that those might not work for me for 2 reasons. First, they counteract albuterol. So that's no good. Second, my body is getting less oxygen when I'm sick, and my heart is pumping faster to try and make up for it. So if I go on beta blockers to slow it down, then I may not get enough oxygen when I'm sick and I could pass out.

Honestly, I think it's just a result of my heart needing to work harder to compensate for other deficiencies in my body. My goal for 2011 is to really focus on exercise to try and strengthen it and settle it down a bit.

Jenhum- I agree.... I think my goal for 2011 is also to focus on getting more exercise, strengthen my body (lungs and heart) and loose some of the weight that my docs are telling me is okay. It can't be okay to be out of shape... especially for the heart and the lungs. I am hoping that they don't suggest meds.

I am anxious to see what the ultrasound results are next month. In the mean time... just trying to remain optimistic and take care of ME.

Hi I also had an alblation for an SVT (super ventricular tachtacardia (forgive my spelling). My heart rate was 225+....had to go to emergency room many times for a shot to slow my heart rate below the operation. If you get diagnosed with SVT feel free to PM me. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My heart rate is always high, usually 100-120 or higher when sick. My docs have never been too concered, they pass it off as being due to meds I'm on the my heart having to work harder with such low pfts. I've had several echo's done and they've all been fine, I had a right heart cath recently that showed the beginnings of mild pulminary hypertension but that was as part of my transplant eval so I guess by this point its a pretty common thing they see in transplant patients.

When M was about 14, a sonar was done to check an irregular heart beat (it sort of skipped a beat now and then). They found that one of her heart valves was not closing properly and said that her heart was functioning at 29%. The doc started her on heart meds & said that she would have to start O2. Within two months of starting the meds, she seemed to miraculously recover, and her heart is fine now.

The docs say the cause might have been due the cronic Staph infection that also seemed to dissapear after IV Vancomycin. I just cant beleive the difference in her health since then, she used to be in the hospital about 3-4 times per year but has only had one admission since then. Strange - but true!
