Are you talking about a free-standing stove in the living space? If so, I think anything you burn is going to involve a certain amount of smoke or other pollutants entering the living space when you open it to add fuel or stoke or whatever. That was certainly the case at my inlaws with a wood stove and we don't let them burn it when we're there with our son w/CF.

Not sure why fuel oil burners in a typical hot-air system would be a concern - all the combustion gas goes out the flu and is separate from the air handler that sends warm air into your living space.

I can't imagine it would be the best sorce of heat for a cfer. My parents used to have a coal furnace when I was little and all I remember is that it was dirty and made the house extra dusty. Remember the scene in a Christmas Story where the Dad is in the basement cussing away as he's stoking the furnace and a big plume of soot comes up the register. Yep, that's about what it was like. Also to take into account - coal miners get black lung from breathing in coal dust so that's a clue it might not be the best thing.

We used to have an indoor wood stove. Then came CF into our lives. We now have an outdoor wood burning stove. We love it! Clean, chear air indoors and all the smoke is outside! If you get a high chimney the smoke won't be in your yard. The expense is buying the stove though!
