Hi there,
I'm sorry you are having to deal with all of this, I know exactly how hard it can be. My daughter started with a cough when she was about 3 weeks old. We thought it was due to reflux because she was projectile vomitting. We put her on prevacid but the cough stuck around and never really went away. When my daughter was about 8 weeks old she got a really bad rash on her bottom, legs, and arms. The doctors thought she had baby eczema and possibly was allergic to diapers. After about a week on cotton diapers and no wipes or cream it started breaking open and bleeding. We rushed her to the er. They couldn't figure out what was going on. The next day I made another appt. with her doctor about the rash. When she weighed only 11 oz. more than her birth weight, he immediately forgot about the rash and insisted I see a gastroenterologist that day. To make a long story short, we were admitted to the hospital that afternonn, stayed for nine days, she had two sweat tests both which did not take. My husband had an uncle with cf, but didn't know if he was a carrier, there was no history on my side. Needless to say, her stool test came back positive with fatty deposits, they started her on enzymes immediately. Still didn't know what the rash was and made an appt. with pedi dermatologist, had to cancel the appt. because we had to stay in hospital to run more test (they really were'nt conerened about the rash), began treating her as if she was positive for cf because the gastro heard the cough and said that wasn't a reflux cough and noticed how fast she was breathing. With all of this going on he referred us to a pulmonologist. After about 4 days on the enzymes, rash started to go away. It turns out it was due to malnourishment because she could not digest any fats or vitamins until she did start on enzymes. Three weeks later the genetic test did come back positive for cf. The rash has completely disappeared and has not returned. She does occasionally get yeast due to antibiotics. I don't know if this helps or not, but in a round about way, the rash is what eventually led us to a diagnosis. If she hadn't had gotten the rash, we might still be trying to figure out what's going on. Have them test her stool and her vitamin levels if they will.
