Hey all,

So the past 3 or so days I have been coughing up blood streaked sputum. Well then this morning apparently a blood vessel broke and I coughed up about a cup of pure blood. That lasted about 4 min. After that I have just coughed up sputum with blood streaks. I know typically this means infection...BUT I am not sick whatsoever. I feel totally fine....no night sweats (which is always the first sign of infection for me), no fevers (not even slightly), no conjestion, and no abnormal mucus or amounts of mucus. WHAT COULD BE WRONG????? I thought it might be my Tobi since I had heard of this happening to others, but I ended Tobi two days ago. My CF clinic won't return my 3 CALLS!! This has happened before with coughing up pure blood, but I have always been sick at those times.

I was on vacation and didn't get to clean my nebs for a couple of weeks..(which I usually clean them weekly) and where I was vacationing it was extremely humid and I found what seemed to be mold fibers in my nebulizers...little gray hairs. Could this have something to do with it???? I am going to go to my general doctor tomorrow for a culture. Any ideas on why this blood thing would happen would be greatly appreciated. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

It could be anything quite honestly. High sugars if you are diabetic, fumes & pollen, exertion, too much caffein, due for your period, too much coughing.

As to the neb cups....yes this could be contributing. You could have easily infected yourself with something other then bacteria. Could be fungal etc.

Mention this to your clinic otherwise they might not know to test for it.

I am lax on my neb cleaning, but you really need to be more diligent. At least wash them out good each night.

Hope you get it straightened out & the blood stays away!

Could be just a weak blood vessel that finally let loose. You will definitely want to get that checked out. As for those neb cups, you would be better to just toss them at this point. I do know that fungal infections can cause bleeding also. Since you coughed up about a cup of pure fresh blood you might want to get a cat scan with contrast to get a look at your blood vessels and see if you have any dilated blood vessels that may need to be repaired.

Chantel,

I've had a very similar experience this week. I was feeling fantastic and bang, up comes the blood, but not as much as you. I will tell you what my CF center told me. If you're coughing up more than a cup of blood they consider that to be a medical emergency. Make sure you keep track as to how much you're bringing up.

As Diane said, you may need a CT scan, or at the very least a chest x-ray. I went in for one today (chest x-ray). Sometimes all it takes is one tiny infection burrowed in there.

As to what causes bleeding, other than the CF, I have rarely been able to discover this with the exception of Motrin and Pulmozyme. TOBI has never made me bleed.

I cannot believe your CF center won't call you back. That's just wrong. What center is it?
