I'm in sort of a bit of a dilemma until I get my CT results back today. I've been on IV antibiotics for 3 weeks now and I got a follow up CT scan of the chest to make sure that the infection is gone. However, I'm supposed to be going into surgery tomorrow for a hernia!! What if my results come back that the infection is still there?? Has anyone ever had surgery while on IV's?? Help!!

------

Thank you all for your replies! They were most helpful. The verdict is that I will stay on IV and just keep the line clean until after the surgery. We will determine whether or not to restart the IVs. My surgery is today at like 12:30 or so. It's my first of 2. This one is for an umbilical hernia (3rd), and my next one will be May 6th for my sinuses. Wish me luck!! <img src="i/expressions/iv.gif" border="0">

Help!!

I've never had surgery & IV's at the same time. Why don't you call your doctor (CF) and see what they say about it. Is the surgery at the same hospital as your CF clinic? Would your CF doc need to give some consent for the surgery to take place?
I hope all goes well for you!!!

Help!!

I actually had sinus surgery in January of 2007 - about 4-5 months before my transplant and I was on IVs at the time. My docs actually told me the only way they would reccomend me having the surgery is if I was admitted a few days prior and put on IVs for a few days then had the surgery and a few more days in the hospital to recover.

I think that ultimately you should just talk to your doctors and see what they think. If they think that you shouldn't have the surgery then try to wait - if they think you will be fine then I would imagine that you should be fine. Then again the final say is up to you and if YOU do not feel okay with it then try to change it.

I also had an infection at the time that was not the most pleasant thing to deal with when I had my surgery. I did have a difficult recovery from that - but then again I was also on O2, and awaiting testing for my transplant evaluation so the situation was a little more serious than the typical I would imagine.

Help!!

I would think that it would be a good thing. It would probably prevent a post surgery infection. Its pretty common to be put on antibiotics after surgery as a precaution.
