Haley - despite what your doc will say - how are you feeling? Is breastfeeding taking a toll on you otherwise? I think you've got to trust your gut on whether or not breastfeeing is adversley affecting your health. If you've got a few pounds to spare and you're enjoying it, well, keep it up. If you are getting sick, you're tired, you're at an unhealthy weight, etc, well then you need to reasses the situation.

I am at about 104bs right now ( at 5'2"). The absolute cusp of how low I can go. My doc didn't say much about it simply becasue I was this weight as a teen and into my early twenties - so it isn't a completely uncommon weight for me - but I feel pretty good, too, so I know that my weight loss is simply breastfeeding related and not due to poor health (though I did have a course of 2 abxs a few weeks ago, so we'll see if I gain any weight after that).

But, what I have decided to do so that I don't go any lower is: I am usually pretty health -coinscious about what I eat, but right now, I am letting myself eat whatever I want: Chickfil a, cheesy nachos - whatever high fatty crap I want (of course I am still eating my fruits and veggies and grains!) The reason I am doing this is because I don't like the shakes and don't want to drink them - they fill me up anyway, but if I give myself the permission to eat the junk I like, I will eat it (and a lot of it!) and so far I have maintained this weight for a few months. So we'll see. I justify it in that if a few months of junk food buys me more time nursing my baby - well, then it works for me.

Also, remember as Morgan gets older (as you introduce solids and stuff) she will start to nurse less and that will also help with maintaing your weight.

i'd eat whatever it is you like and whatever you can tolerate so you can keep bf. i agree that you have already given your lo a healthy start to life and if you have to stop-it will be ok.
but, i understand that the thought of stopping breaks your heart. i can't imagine stopping right now bc i love that time with her so much and of course bc its so good for her.

i'd really push the nightime eating/snacking. i'd do a weight gain protein type shake at night and in the am too. you can get ones at the health food store-or if you are a picky eater just get one at gnc or the supermarket to get used to the taste. you can get ones that taste just like milkshakes.

for me also, i find that if i eat a good breakfast i am more motivated to eat lunch and dinner-dont know why. some people say that eating a breakfast fills them up and keeps them from eating, but for me its the opposite. there's alot of high calorie breakfast options too.
i really struggled to keep weight on while pregnant and i was SUCH a picky eater. i actually lost 7-8 lbs while preg. So i have lots of great high cal recipies and snack ideas-please let me know if you'd like any. i know its easy to get stuck in a rut. i have more high cal gourmet and yummy breakfast recipies than Rachel Ray!

ill run this by u too-i decided to start a milk freezer stash. i got a good pump and pump a little extra every day and freeze it. this way, if i get sick or have to stop bf earlier than i want to, (which is a year) i have a good supply for her. even if i did half formula and half thawed bm, i'll feel better about it. i realize that needing to do form isn't the end of the world if i absolutely have to stop due to my health. but-emotionally i think i'd get through it better knowing i have frozen bm to give her if needed.

I keep a huge container of cashew nuts (bought at Costco) in the living room where I breast feed during the day. I love the salt and it's a healthy, substantial snack. I also keep nuts, seeds or snack bars in the diaper bag.

Sorry don't have much to add - I was down around 15 lbs from pre-pregnancy for the first year and a half after having Logan. Now I'm about 8-10 lbs down and I like it this way - I was trying to maintain it and now I'm pregnant so we'll see how much I gain considering I'm still nursing Logan.

I basically stuffed myself for the first 18 months to maintain that weight. You just need to get in the habit of eating often - and eating high calorie, nutrient dense food. Nuts are a great suggestion even though I don't care for them myself. Do you like avocados? I LOVE them and they will probably be a staple during the pregnancy. You can add ground flax seed or flax oil to lots of stuff for extra nutrition and extra calories. Pasta (barilla plus is the healthiest) is high in calories and can be good for you if you get the right kinds. I also gave myself some liberty to eat higher fat foods that aren't good for me but you have to be careful - stuffing yourself full of junk may actually make you not feel so well. Go for high fat, high calorie salad dressing.

I think if you put your mind to it you will be just fine - but you do have to make the effort. Interestingly I'm pancreatic sufficient and have never had a problem with weight but nursing a baby sure burned a lot of calories for me.
