Help with CPT on baby!

My 7 month old non- cf babe has a right lung consolidation and plural effusion. We had him to see the CF peads doc on friday and he suggested that we do some cpt on him. I was having information overload when we were there and never asked how long each treatment should be. How firm do you have to be to be effective?
I'm sure he doesn't have CF but we are having a sweat test in a few weeks to rule it out. Any advice on the CPT on a small babe would be appreciated.

Thanks

Emily (w/cf) is 4 1/2 months old. We do about 5 minutes per lobe (R L uppers - front, R L uppers back, R L lowers back and sides under arms.) Good Luck! Hope the sweat test is indeed negative!

Cup your hands as if you wanted to hold water inside your palm. Then gently cup over the chest front, sides and back. The idea is to create a popping sound. I would do this to yourself before touching your child to make sure you are not creating a stinging sensation. They do sell hand held massagers and that might be good too. Positioning the baby over a pillow would be good but then again I do not know what is best. I would ask the doctor and also do a search on CPT or physiotherapy on an infant. IF you put in cystic fibrosis it will help
good luck

I have a 4 1/2 month old baby with CF and we do albuterol and CPT 1-2 times a day right now. We use a little rubber device that you could get at the CF doctor jsut call them. We do the R&L uppers and lowers and sides for about 3 min a piece. Ashton cant really lay with his head down on the lowers due to reflux but that is the ideal way to have them. hes still little enough i do it in my lap and now lately most of the time i do it on the bed or floor on a blanket with toys for him.

good luck

Part of your questions as about how "firm" to do the CPT. When my son was in the hospital at about age 15 months, he had at least 6-10 different technicians do his CPT during the time he was there. They all used the little rubber thing that was mentioned in another reply and their touch ranged from just barely a tap to one person who whacked him so hard I thought his teeth would fly out. This led me to ask the primary Dr. about how hard: her response was "as hard as he'll put up with". We've used that as permission to not whack him so hard that he runs away when it's CPT time.

Our hospital had a handout and because DS spent the first 6 weeks of his life in the NICU, we were able to learn how to do CPT with the RTs watching, giving advice. Would be pretty funny to have DS bouncing on our knees and the alarms going off and he'd be fast asleep. It actually relaxed him. Freaked out the other people in the room. "omigosh what are they doing to that poor baby"!

We started with the rubber cups, but hands worked much better. Pretty much wack them really had to get that stuff up and out. Don't worry about flipping them upside down. We started off doing 1/2 - 1 1/2 minutes per position, then 3 minutes a position.

all the above answers are great, our 9 month old screams  and
fights most of the time , some times he'll fall asleep. The thing
to remember is that he needs it done ,so you have to do it, it can
be the hardest thing in the world

My 7 month old son does very well w/CPT if we put a Baby Einstein DVD on. He doesn't even care that we are pounding on him. Baby Einstein is awesome for therapies and treatments!

Thank you all so much for your replies. Zac seems to like the pounding. His lungs sound like they are clearing up and he is feeling better. We are back to the doctor tomorrow for a follow-up.

Thanks again for all the advise,

hi, we  are parents of a 9 month old boy with cf, we stay in
Scotland and it would appear that we are behind a little in terms
of new technology, e.g vests,  but we are interested in the
'little rubber ring' that is used for cpt [physio] ,in scotland. We
dont seem to have any products like this. We would be grateful if
you could supply us with any info on this.I have  a blog---
dyza---, newly opened, not got round to putting anything on it
yet, been very busy lately, thank you .
