Kayla is going crazy! She cannot stop scratching her eyes, her throat hurts and she is coughing all day/night. She is miserable (as is the rest of the family because when Kaylas not happy, noone is happy)

She is highly allergic to most trees, and right now, in the St. Louis area, the tree allergins are at high levels.

She went to school today, but honestly, she looks awful! I asked the teacher to make sure she kept the windows closed (the a/c is on because it is going to be 80 degrees today.) and to call me if she just couldn't take it any more.

We have tried Claritin, Zyrtec, Benadryl...

Any suggestions? Tree allergins are supposed to be high the next few days.

My son (no CF) has the exact same misery. He takes singulair daily, zyrtec on bad days and patanol eye drops. Those help him a lot with the itching. All that, and he still usualy need three days on orapred to clear everything up. I'm thinking by next week we'll have to take him in.

It often takes a combination of meds to treat allergies effectively. Nathan is also on singulair every morning and zrytec every night and we switch them up occassinally, the night one, zrytec we change out with benadryll every so often. You may need more than just one to get her some relief. Are allergy shots an option? I had really bad tree allergies when I was younger and the shots made a world of difference for me. Eye drops usually don't help with the allergy but they do help make the eyes feel better and may help wash out the pollen that gets in the eyes from rubbing them and the wind which may help some.

LOL,
Patty

Hi again,

I just called the CF team for my son because I am going out of town for the weekend and his cough is up slightly and he was sneezing a little more than usual. I wasn't even thinking allgergies but they did so I thought I would share with you all that they are doing for him. It maybe too much because I think yours is younger but it might give you some ideas and things you could ask about.

1. We are changing his allegra to the evening and adding benadryl with it in the evening

2. We are changing his zrytec to the morning

3. We are adding albuterol 2 more times a day for a total of 4 x's a day

4. They are increasing his nasonex from 1 squirt 1x a day to 2 x's a day

5. Nasal rinses 3-4 x's a day as tolerated

6. If there is no improvement they are going to step up his advair from 1 inhalation 2x's a day to 2 inhalations 2 x's a day

7. If still no improvement a predisone burst

I wasn't sure what all you are doing for her allergies but there seems to be a lot that can be tried. I was also told that the allergy season is up and running and really bad this year. He has a PIKO that measures both his peak flow and FEV1 and I was noticing that in the morning the numbers were pretty close to his norm but by afternoon they were dropping by up to 20% and was told they are pretty sure it is due to the allergies. Hope the above helps with some ideas, I knew that they could take more than 1 allergy med, it is just knowing which combination to take and what can be taken together.
