Help with my dog....

So we were out doing yard work and our puppy was out as well, we had a wheel barrow with dirt in it and it tipped over on her. So what should we do? I'm not very experienced with dogs but I know some of you are.

She's not crying, she doesn't wince or cry (or pull away) when we play with her arm or paw, it does seem very limp, not swollen or broken to our view, we've felt around and stuff, she isn't putting any weight on it.

I really hope she's okay, my DH called the vet and they said we could give her a little baby aspirin and if she still doesn't put weight on it to take her in tomorrow.

Any thoughts? or ideas? or anything???

Thanks

When our rottie Krieger was about 15 weeks old, he fell off of our deck onto some bushes below.

We just watched him for the first 24 hours, kept feeling his legs for any swelling, put a little ice on it the first night and gave him some tylenol every 4-6 hours for a day or two. He seemed to have a little tiny bit of swelling, like he irritated some muscle/tissue, and didn't put a lot of weight on it for a few days, but was fine.

Had he been having swelling after that first 24 hours, any whining or any heavy limping I would have taken him in the next day. Since you said it does seem very limp but not swollen or broken I would just watch it tonight and into tomorrow afternoon. If he was wincing out in pain or couldn't at all walk, then I would say take him in ASAP.

Hope all is well and give an update!!

Keep the dog confined so that it can't run around, if you have a
dog crate would be excellent, if you don't have a crate then try
and make an area in the house or yard that the dog can move around
but not run. The less stress on the leg the better

keep exercise to a minimum for a couple of days, and when you do
start back just do some gentle walking you don't want her running
around crazy.
Easier said than done, but try to keep the dog confined, so he's not using it. We used to have the "flying basset hound". He'd fly off the deck, forgetting it was a 4-5 foot drop. We'd take him to the vet and they'd prescribe an anti-inflammatory -- heavy duty stuff that started with an R, which made things worse because then the dog would feel no pain and run around like a maniac even more. Sorry to hear. I would be worried too and keep her from being too active or doing too much like others have said. Let her recoup slowly but if she doesn't seem to get better ina few days i would call the vet and see what they say. I'm sure she'll be okay.

Thanks everyone After we gave her some baby aspirin last night she was actually doing much better, putting a little weight on it, moving it, able to hold her bone with it. This morning she seems to be in a little more pain, not putting as much weight on it. I think she needs some more baby aspirin but the 24 hr. vet we talked to last night said only every 24 hrs. that just doesn't seem right to me. And then the vet we go to for shots said they wouldn't say anything until they see her!!!! So she's going in this afternoon.

It is easier said then done to confine them, our little dog loves to jump and run, last night as hard as we tried to keep her from jumping, she jumped off the bed and back on!!!!! She jumped off the sofa today and then limped more, I just think she's in pain! but I'm not a vet what do I know???? My husband will take her in this afternoon, I have to go to work.

Thanks again I'll let ya'll know how it went.

The vet thinks it's just bruised, she gave her a shot of anti-inflamitories and a pill to take every 24hrs. I was right, I thought it was okay but that it hurt her. Anyways, thanks for all the thoughts and help

HairGirl,

Glad to hear that it's just a little inflamed and nothing more! We've had to give our animals benadryl before to make them drowsy during our move (and 24 hour straight car ride). If you are having a problem keeping the dog calm and from jumping on and off things, you might want to consider benadryl (just an OTC form). We gave our cats some too, but about 1/4-1/2 a pill instead of the 2-3 that we gave our dogs.

Thanks for the update!
