HELP!

Hi
I am a bit of a lurker on this site and am not sure if this is the right place to post this. Im wondering if anyone else suffers from gastric reflux and if so what are your symptoms and meds?

I have been getting an intense pain from time to time that my dr thinks is reflux. it comes and goes but some days has me in tears. Medication helped for a while but of late the pain is back. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Thanks!

Hey there!

I suffer BIG TIME from reflux. About 3 years ago it got so bad to the point that I stopped eating just about everything but bread and milk. It would wake me up at night, make me cough, make my mouth water and put me in tears as well because it was so painful. Tums/Rolaids would help for a few hours, but then quickly wear off, especially if I ate or drank something (no matter what it was...I mean, WATER gave me heartburn). I honestly thought that was normal heartburn! I kind of mentioned it in passing to my cf doc one day and he said it was probably causing all my coughing. He put me on prevacid (30mg) and I've been GREAT ever since. If I skip just one day of prevacid I can feel it...not as badly as before, by any means, but I notice a significant difference without it. I hope my post helped...you're not alone, I've felt your pain! I hope all goes well and know that even something taken everyday that's over-the-counter, like zantac, couldn't hurt in your situation if you don't think it's frequent enough for a prescription.

Just about every CFer takes some kind of antacid I think. Zantac, Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec - any of those work fine if you take them 1-2x a day and they last for hours. Personally I take nexium and it works great. I think Nexium is also the only one that is prescription only now, all the others are OTC.

If you need something like RIGHT NOW and have bad heartburn, try Gaviscon instead of Tums. It's a little more pricey but it's really amazing. (and tastes like cake icing! to me, anyway)

I get really really bad reflux, especially when my prednisone level is high, it makes me cough, it feels like their is a hole in my esphagus.... I have to take two PPI"s daily or I am not able to even recline back in a chair it burns so bad

I take Nexium and Protonix and shots of antacid as needed
