Hemoptysis without Infection

Hey all,

I'm a 34 year old adult CF Female and haven't coughed up blood in a long time. Usually when I do it's a few teaspoons here and there. It usually comes in bouts a few times for a few days and then resolves when i increase my vitamin K. It also happens when I start vigorous exercising after I have been sedentary for a while.

My question or I guess complaint is that I recenlty just had a bleed (minor) after starting up some vigorous exercising and it's also near my period--I've also heard this can have an impact.

I feel great and my PFTs last week were awesome. So, why when I call my doc to let them know do they jump to the most dire cause? To me, it's obviously caused by strenuous exercise and an increase in ibuprofen for muscle pain. Anyone else have any thoughts? I'm 99.9% sure it's no type of infection.

The docs have agreed to let me be the owner of my health and keep an eye on things and come in if it happens again. Does anyone else feel as if the doctor's make you more anxious about CF than yourself?

I don't think they make me more anxious- but they seem to try . They are just looking out for us though.

If I cough up blood, it is usually right around the beginning of my period (give or take a few days either way if I remember right- thankfully, it's been a while ). My dr. at Children's said that this isn't unusual, too and not to worry about it unless it was more than a tablespoon, I think.

Hi, I'm a bleeder. I bleed most of the time, not serious bleeds, just annyong-don't-go-away bleeds.
So my dr's and I have established that unless I have a BAD bleed (meaning a lot of blood, volume speaking) and I have symptoms of illness (not the typical day to day stuff), we let it go.
At first I was on IV's ALL the time because I'm allergic to all oral meds. So everytime I'd bleed, they would start all of this crap. Well it got to the point where I wouldn't call them b/c I knew they would do all of this. So I would just 'report' my bleeding when I'd go to clinic.
On one dr appt., my dr and I got serious and I told him how I didn't like everyone 'over re-acting' and he AGREED. So this was helpful. I bleed if I sneeze, hit a bump in the car, rail road tracks, laughing, exercising, etc.
So mine doesn't mean infection either. I think you just need to be up front and serious about how you feel and what you expect from the hospital.
At least that is what worked for me.
Good luck!

I had to duke things out with my doctor not too long after she came to my clinic. She insisted that my bleeds were from infection. When I knew darn well many other things trigger them including PMS, caffeine, dry or cold air, physical exertion etc. It wasnt until I was in the hospital after being on iv's for some time and my hemoptysis start that she agreed with me. Granted it took me quite a few years to learn the signs (ok almost 30), but now I know them. Our bodies go thru a lot especially our lungs so to me it seems logical that bleeds can happen without infection. Not always, but yes it can. Thats why its important for us to learn our bodies and stand up for our beliefs.
