Herpes aka Cold Sores

Okay, I have always gotton cold sores and/or fever blisters since I can remember. My mom has always gotten them too. When I got to junior high age-ish of course I read about genital herpes and eventually found out there are two types of herpes, BUT you can spread them from either site (mouth or genitals)... so ever since I found out, I have always been extra careful when I have such cold sore/ fever blister.

Meaning I wash my hands constantly and try to not touch even though it itches like mad! My point is though, herpes can tecnically form on any area where there is mucus like eyes, anus, nose... well I think I may have infected my feeding tube area some how! It is still not healed all the way (aka still oozing mucus/ moist and pink) and so I am still cleaning it multiple times a day... I must have put neosporin on the area without realizing I didnt wash my hands if I touched my fever blister.

Besides everything other thing I am frustrated with as far as the feeding tube goes, I am afraid I gave myself herpes there... I am home in my small town with my parents and will be back to the bigger city tomorrow, I am calling my GI doctor who put it in and/or going to the ER...

The site just isnt healing up at all. I first got it and didnt feel to bad, but then I had about a week and a half of pain, then it was healing I thought, healing still but still a bit painful, then around the end of the 4th week of having it, I thought it was completely healed up... it was still leaking mucus stuff but wasnt red or sore and the area was looking like a scar... now for about a week the opening has been getting worse and worse, and more and more painful (more painful than when I got it even) it just stings pretty much all the time, coughing hurts all over again, laying on my sides hurts it, having the skin stretched out hurts, having the skin scrunched up hurts it... and so last night it just looked like it had a bit of a fever blister looking area around the very outside of the hole but it could have been irritation from the edge of the tab too, but today, it looks like the red area with little bumps (fever blister looking!) is now around the other side of the tab and hole.

Sorry so long... any advice until I can see a doctor would be great.

Tell me if you think it is plausible that I could have accidentally transferred b/c it is a mucus membrane area.

Do you think if I take the tube out and it heals I will be okay? I dont think I can take the tube out so I feel like I am going to have herpes outbreaks there now too...

Pretty worried about this... I always stress out about transferring down-town (sorry if tmi, but its the truth!) and now I just feel scared. And of course there is no information about herpes on a feeding tube area online <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

How about anyone who's feeding tube hole looks like its turning inside out?

I am going to the doctor tomorrow b/c the site itself is looking worse and worse... Its been over 5 weeks, almost the 6 weeks when I am supposed to switch to a button or low profile tube... this thing is NOT healed... not even close.

I have decided for now it is not a cold sore, but rather some sort of rash and/or irriation. The thing hurts really bad though, and I am definitely getting sick of it.

Any input on how long exactly it took for the hole to look healed up and scarred and not open and puss-y and shiny and moist like its still fresh?

i would definatley check with your doc...my daughters site gets irritated from the acid in her stomach and her doc recommended to put a paste of mylanta and desitin (diaper rash cream) around the hole when it begins to turn red so it doesnt get worse. it is hard to tell what it might be without seeing it, but i think youre on the right track by going to your doc! good luck!!ricki
