There was an anonymous post up before that one that said stuff about how Julie thinks she knows everything. It could've been considered rude.

Jo, my husband also started using the Boost shakes (they are just like ensure, just a little cheaper) and he has noticed better weight maintenance with those too.

Emily, thank you for the clarification.

I personally don't mind if people think that of me, I just share what knowledge I do have and welcome what others share with me. I have learned a lot since I've been on this site in the last 6 monts from others, just by posting my questions or reading others posts. We all have something to offer. I also happend to be an RN and work on a ward where CF patients are cared for, and I take a very active roll in my husbands care and am friends with one of his doctors so he gives us "off the record" CF information, so I just like to pass the info that I hear onto others who might benefit from it. It doesn't mean I am right, or know everything because I certainly do not. I just want to share with others what has been shared with me.

Hi Julie, I know this is a little off topic but I just wanted to ask you a question. You mentioned in your last post that you work on a floor of the hospital where CF pts are treated. Are you ever nervous that you will bring "bugs" home to your husband? I only ask because I too work in a hospital and sometimes I think about exposure to germs and bugs even though I work with pregnant women--not anywhere near CF pts.
Im sure you are extra extra careful, but i was just wondering if you work directly w/ CF pts or just in the area?

Jaime,

Yes, that is a concern of mine, but ALAS, I am in the military and have NO choice to say where I want to go or don't want to go even if it concerns my husbands health-(I've tried, not a good road for me ) But, I wear masks in all my patients rooms, I also work with cancer patients who have no immune system, so our hospital policy is to wear masks with them, and make them wear masks when they leave the room so that makes my "mask wearing" a little simpler. Also, I leave my uniform at work and wear it for 3 days unless it's dirty and then when I do wash it, it gets washed at a laundry mat-ALONE, even though we have a washer at home. I also shower at the hospital before I go home at the end of my shift. That's about all I can really do to try not to bring super bad bugs home. It has worked for us thusfar.

Hey Julie, thanks for responding.
Im glad to hear you take such extra precautionary measures and Im sure it makes a great difference in your husbands health. (I hope you dont think I was questioning you---just interested in how I can be more careful w/ germs too)
I have to say, that stinks that the military couldnt be a little more understanding when it comes to matters like that!

To whoever asked the question
Officially, no he does not have CFRD. BUT, his doctor did a GTT test on him and the values were somewhat abnormal so he wants to repeat them and watch him. His blood sugar will just crash sometimes, and he has to be cautious of what he eats because of that.

Have you looked into why he crashes? Could it be from the 252 (291 if he uses milk) carbs he's taking in from his shakes. One thing you forgot to mention about the Serious Mass is that is has a "WARNING" label on the side of the bag for diabetics. Simple, complex, what ever you want to call them, they are still carbs and for someone that has diabeties or CFRD, 291 of them means trouble. I ordered a 12 lb. bag of Serious Mass and mixed my first shake. My sugars were THROUGH THE ROOF, with insulin coverage. I'm guessing this is why your husband is crashing. And since I know you are worried about cholesterol, you might want to know that scandi's have 0mg and serious mass has 55mg, per serving. My opinion on the taste of the shake is that it is horrible. With the 334g of powder mix needed for one serving, compared to the 85g of mix in a Scandi, the serious mass shake requires 4 times as much powder mix and is 4 times as thick. Scandi shakes a "gimmic?" I don't think so. Yes they have only 5g of protein, but if you add whey, like someone mentioned, that would put you at about 30g, which is plenty for one serving.

This post was not meant to cut anyone down or to be mean. If you think it's working for your husband, great. However, I would look into his CFRD and maybe question why the put a WARNING LABEL FOR DIABETICS on the side of the bag.

In my opinion, this is not the right product for a person with CF to gain weight.

Anyone want to buy 12 lbs. of Strawberry? It's going in the garbage tomorrow.

i agree garbage is where they belong. scandi shakes are for what we need and thats why our dieticians suggest them to us. if the serious mass shakes were oh so great for us then thats what our dieticians would be pushing on us. but hey thats my own oipinion..also has anyone tried the cookies from sourcecf?i got a few samples and they arent bad.1 cookie is 550 calories,20g protien. but they are expensive, $29.95 for 1 dozen, they are formulated especialy for cf-hence the name(sourcecf)

Well, at least you tried the shakes before and then gave your opinion. I guess it's a, to each his own thing.
just to clarify though, Mark's (my hubbie) blood sugar doesn't go through the roof, it's the exact opposite, it plumets to a low level if he doesn't eat every 2 hours or so. So, maybe it works for him because of that fact. I am sorry you had a bad experience with the product, but it works for him, it just didn't work for you.

The reason why CF centers can't "push" a product like that is simple. Scandi shakes are manufactured by a drug company and therefore have to pass all sorts of FDA regulations before being put for customers. The serious mass shakes are not required to pass all FDA regulations (just like a lot of products on the market aren't-probably even the food you are eating for dinner tonight) and therefore a licensed medical professional can not suggest or recommend the product.

The serious mass is what has kept him at 180-190 lbs for the past 3 years, with 6% body fat, a 6 pack and muscles to show. But I can understand you saying it doesn't work for you, I am sorry it worked out that way.

Fair enough, Julie. As you know, not everything works the same for everybody and I'm glad it's working for your husband. We are all different, but in the same boat. I would however, check with your endocrynologist to see what they say about that supplement. And remember, it is just a "supplement," meaning it's to be taken ALONG with meals. Maybe a proper breakfast or lunch, along with the serious mass, would benefit your husband and keep his sugars in check. As far as the scandi shakes go, I'm a firm believer in them and they work very well for me. One or two of the scandi's a day, plus a little scoop of whey for the extra protein, and I am very easily able to put on the pounds. And yes, I am the same person that initially questioned you about the scandi's and the serious mass. I'm sure it looks like I was being "rude or mean" as a couple people took it, but a healthy debate is not a bad thing. I know your husband hasn't been "officially" diagnosed with CFRD, but more than likely, it is innevitable. Once his sugars are in check, he will feel even better than he feels now. My docs are VERY into the CFRD and realize how important it is to lung function. Good luck and stay healthy!

Hey,
I agree, the debate was fun while it lasted. He does eat regular meals, but he uses the shakes as his snacks, which he eats 2-4 times a day. We have been watching his sugars closely because it is a concern, but so far nothing big has been noticed. The doctor said, "his sugars are a little abnormal but nothing to worry about now, we'll just monitor it."

Scandi shakes just don't work for my husband. He tried them for a few months (off all his other supplements) and dropped about 15lbs. That just wasn't ok for him, so he went back to what was previously working for him. But I agree to you, to each his own. Everybody's body works a bit differnetly.

Thanks for a great "debate", I didn't think anyone was rude (although that post where someone said something about me was deleted before I could read it so... )
